Weeks after a $388 million hack, Bitget starts closing some customers' accounts and will not say whose or why

Bitget is showing some of its customers the door. The exchange said in a post on X on Saturday, October 17, that it will discontinue services for certain users in a one-off exercise, while stressing that user funds are safe and the platform will keep running, Cointelegraph and FinanceFeeds reported.

Affected users will receive notices by email, in-app message or push notification setting out next steps, deadlines and how to withdraw. Users who have not received an official notice can keep using their accounts as usual, and support staff will help with pending orders, withdrawals and account questions. Bitget also warned customers to rely only on official channels and to watch for phishing links and impersonation accounts.

What it did not say is just as notable. Bitget has not disclosed the jurisdictions, customer categories or number of accounts involved, nor the reason, FinanceFeeds notes. The announcement comes three weeks after attackers moved assets out of Bitget's hot and warm wallets on September 24; the loss estimate was raised from $351.6 million to about $387.5 million, and withdrawals were fully restored by October 2, according to the company's updates as reported by FinanceFeeds. FinanceFeeds says no link between the breach and the closures has been disclosed. Bitget has already set dates for leaving Japan: accounts there go close-only on November 1 and remaining positions face forced closure on December 31.
