Can you stake bitcoin?

Not natively, since bitcoin runs on proof of work. Bitcoin staking means locking BTC to secure other networks or lending it out, and it carries extra risks.

You cannot stake bitcoin in the way you stake ether or solana, because bitcoin does not use proof of stake. What gets marketed as bitcoin staking is a set of add-on arrangements that put your BTC to work somewhere else, usually in exchange for rewards paid in other tokens. Each one changes who you trust and what you can lose.

Why can't bitcoin be staked natively?

Bitcoin blocks are produced by miners, not validators. According to the Bitcoin.org FAQ, each block must carry a proof of work that is very costly to produce, and the network adjusts difficulty so a block is found about every 10 minutes on average. No part of that process asks holders to lock up coins, so there is nothing on the Bitcoin network itself to stake. If you want the background, see how Bitcoin mining works and what crypto staking is.

How does Babylon bitcoin staking work?

Babylon is a protocol that lets BTC holders lend economic security to proof-of-stake networks. Its documentation says the BTC stays on the Bitcoin base layer in time-locked scripts, without wrapping, bridges or custodians. Figment's Babylon guide explains that staking creates a new output with three preset spending paths: normal withdrawal after the timelock, early unbonding, and slashing.

You delegate to a "finality provider," which works much like a validator. If that provider signs two different blocks at the same height, its key is exposed and a portion of the staked BTC, fixed in your staking transaction, can be burned. Babylon's docs put the unbonding period at about 21 days as of October 2026. Rewards are paid in BABY and other network tokens, not in bitcoin.

What other kinds of bitcoin yield exist?

Some exchanges offer BTC rewards programs. Kraken's April 2026 guide describes options with flexible unstaking or fixed lock-up periods, and notes that rewards are not guaranteed. Other routes include lending BTC out, or turning it into a token on another chain first, which is covered in our guide to wrapped bitcoin. In these cases a company or smart contract, not you, controls the coins while they earn.

What are the risks of bitcoin yield?

Kraken lists protocol bugs, unbonding and lock-up periods, slashing, hacks and market swings as risks of staking BTC. The US SEC warned in 2022 that crypto interest accounts are not covered by bank deposit insurance, that providers may lend your assets to borrowers, and that the company could fail. With protocols like Babylon you also depend on the finality provider behaving correctly and on the scripts working as designed.

The core tradeoff is simple. Plain bitcoin in your own wallet earns nothing but carries no slashing or counterparty risk. Any yield comes from adding a new party or system that could fail.
