How does crypto on Robinhood work?

Robinhood crypto lets US users buy, sell and transfer coins in a custodial account, with commission-free or tiered-fee orders and a separate self-custody app.

Robinhood crypto works like a brokerage account for coins. You fund it with dollars, place buy and sell orders in the app, and Robinhood holds the crypto for you. You can also send coins to outside wallets or receive them, and Robinhood runs a separate self-custody app and its own blockchain, Robinhood Chain.

What are Robinhood crypto fees?

Robinhood offers two ways to route a crypto order. The default is market maker routing, which has no commission. Robinhood's fee schedule says it earns volume rebates from the market makers that fill these orders. No commission does not mean no cost, as our guide on crypto fees explains, since the execution price itself matters.

The second option is exchange routing, which sends orders to partner exchanges and charges a visible fee based on your trailing 30-day volume. As of the June 2026 fee schedule, taker fees start at 0.95% for volume under $10,000 and fall to 0.03% for very large traders. Maker fees, paid by limit orders that wait on the order book, start at 0.50% and reach 0% at the top tier. Robinhood says neither routing method guarantees a better all-in price, and maker fees are still rolling out to customers.

How does a Robinhood crypto transfer work?

You can send and receive crypto from each coin's page in the app after finishing identity verification, which can take up to five business days. Robinhood charges nothing extra for transfers, but the blockchain's network fee is added to each withdrawal.

Some details matter. Each coin must go on its own network, and coins such as XRP, HBAR and ATOM may need a memo or tag. Deposits wait for network confirmations plus a short security review. Withdrawal limits depend on your verification level and history. If you turn on address allowlisting, new addresses take 48 hours to activate. Robinhood warns that transfers are final once sent, so a mistake works as described in what happens if you send crypto to the wrong address.

Is there a Robinhood crypto wallet?

Yes, two in a sense. Coins in your main Robinhood account sit in a custodial wallet that Robinhood controls. Robinhood Wallet is a separate app where you hold your own keys. Robinhood points out that if you lose access to those keys, there is no recovery option. The difference is covered in our guide to custodial vs non-custodial wallets.

What is Robinhood Chain?

Robinhood Chain is an Ethereum layer 2 network built on the Arbitrum framework from Offchain Labs. It uses ETH for gas and supports Ethereum developer tools. Its mainnet went live on July 1, 2026. It is designed for tokenized assets and DeFi, including Robinhood's stock tokens, which give price exposure but not legal ownership. As of October 2026, Decrypt reports those stock tokens are not available to US users.
