Is crypto taxed in the UAE and Dubai?
The UAE has no personal income tax, so individuals in Dubai generally pay no crypto tax on personal investments. Businesses can owe 9% corporate tax.
For most individuals, crypto is not taxed in the UAE, including Dubai. The country does not impose personal income tax, so personal investment gains, crypto included, generally fall outside the tax net. The picture is different for businesses, for value added tax on services, and for people who still owe tax to another country.
Is there crypto capital gains tax in the UAE?
Not for personal investors. The UAE does not impose personal income tax, inheritance tax or gift tax, and corporate tax rules exclude personal investment income, as explained below. A resident who buys bitcoin with savings and later sells it at a profit does not owe UAE tax on that gain.
That does not cover everyone living in Dubai. The United States, for example, taxes its citizens on worldwide income wherever they live, so an American in Dubai still reports crypto gains to the IRS. The guide to how crypto is taxed in the US covers those rules.
When does UAE corporate tax apply to crypto?
The UAE introduced corporate tax for financial years starting on or after June 1, 2023. Taxable income up to AED 375,000 is taxed at 0%, and income above that at 9%. Companies that trade, mine or run crypto businesses fall under these rules like any other company.
Individuals can be caught too. Under Cabinet Decision No. 49 of 2023, a person's business activity is subject to corporate tax only when total turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year. Income from wages, personal investment and real estate investment does not count as business for this purpose. Someone with no other taxable business does not need to register.
Is VAT charged on crypto in the UAE?
Mostly not. Cabinet Decision No. 100 of 2024, effective November 15, 2024, exempted from VAT the transfer of ownership of virtual assets and their conversion. Those two exemptions apply back to January 1, 2018. Custody and management services are also covered, though advisers note that services charged with an explicit fee may be treated differently.
What is the UAE crypto tax reporting framework?
Even without a personal tax on gains, the UAE is joining international data sharing. In September 2025 the Ministry of Finance signed the multilateral agreement for the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), an OECD system under which crypto platforms collect customer information that tax authorities swap automatically.
Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first information exchanges expected in 2028. This matters most for residents who still owe tax elsewhere, since their home country may receive details of their UAE crypto accounts. Dubai's licensing side is covered in crypto regulation around the world, and other tax systems in crypto tax around the world.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
