How long does a crypto transfer take?
How long a crypto transfer takes depends on the network, the fee and the platform. Ethereum has 12-second slots and Bitcoin blocks average 10 minutes.
How long a crypto transfer takes depends on three things: how fast the blockchain makes blocks, how many confirmations the receiver waits for, and any checks the sending or receiving platform adds. A transfer between two self-custody wallets can finish in seconds or minutes, while an exchange withdrawal can take longer.
What is the Bitcoin confirmation time?
Bitcoin aims for one block about every 10 minutes, but the gap varies. The Bitcoin Wiki notes there is roughly a 63% chance a block arrives within 10 minutes, 95% within 30 minutes, and occasionally a block takes an hour.
Your transaction gets its first confirmation when it lands in a block. Each new block on top adds another. Ethereum is faster. It divides time into 12-second slots, and blocks reach finality, the point where reversing them would be extremely costly, after checkpoints that come every 32 slots.
How many confirmations do you need?
There is no single rule. Each confirmation makes the payment harder to reverse. The traditional Bitcoin client shows a payment as confirmed at six blocks, about an hour, though the Bitcoin Wiki calls that number somewhat arbitrary.
Exchanges set their own counts for each coin. As of October 2026, Kraken lists three confirmations for Bitcoin deposits and says its estimates assume your transaction makes it into the first possible block. You can watch the count rise using a blockchain explorer.
Why is my crypto transfer pending?
The usual causes are:
- Low fee. Unconfirmed Bitcoin transactions wait in the mempool, and miners pick higher-fee ones first. If your fee is too low, you wait longer, and the transaction can eventually drop out. Some wallets let you bump the fee using replace-by-fee. See what are crypto fees.
- Congestion. When many people are sending at once, blocks fill up and fees rise.
- Normal processing time. Coinbase suggests waiting at least 30 minutes, then checking the block explorer. If it still shows zero confirmations, contact support.
Why is my exchange withdrawal delayed?
Exchanges often add their own steps on top of the blockchain. On Coinbase, crypto bought with cash that is still on hold can be traded but not sent off the platform until the hold ends, and support cannot shorten it. Coinbase also says incoming funds may wait for missing account checks, and should be credited within 3 to 5 business days once those are done.
