What is Base, Coinbase's blockchain?

Base is an Ethereum layer 2 blockchain incubated by Coinbase. It uses ETH for gas, hosts native USDC, and as of October 2026 has no network token of its own.

Base is a blockchain network built by Coinbase that runs on top of Ethereum as a layer 2. It handles transactions more cheaply than Ethereum's main chain while relying on Ethereum for security. Anyone can use it with a regular Ethereum-style wallet, and you do not need a Coinbase account.

Is Base a layer 2?

Yes. Coinbase's help center describes Base as an Ethereum layer 2 chain that uses ETH as its gas token and is fully compatible with Ethereum's virtual machine. That means apps and tools built for Ethereum can run on Base with few changes. For background, see what a layer 2 is.

Base first ran on Optimism's OP Stack and was part of the group of chains known as the Superchain. Its testnet went live in February 2023, and Cointelegraph reported that the network opened to everyone on August 9, 2023. In February 2026 CoinDesk reported that Base would move to a single codebase it manages itself, while staying compatible with OP Stack standards during the transition.

Coinbase has said it plans to decentralize Base over time. The Block reported that the Azul upgrade, activated on mainnet in May 2026, added a system of multiple proof types for withdrawals and moves Base toward a more decentralized stage.

How does the Base network relate to Coinbase?

Coinbase incubated Base and its team leads development. Coinbase users can move funds onto Base from their accounts, and people can also bridge assets from Ethereum and other chains. In its 2026 strategy, reported by CoinDesk, Base said it is focusing on markets for tokenized assets, stablecoin payments and developer tools.

Base is a separate network from the Coinbase exchange. Funds you hold in a self-custody wallet on Base are under your own keys, not held by Coinbase. Read custodial vs non-custodial wallets for the difference.

How does USDC on Base work?

Circle began issuing USDC natively on Base on September 5, 2023. Circle says native USDC on Base is always redeemable 1 to 1 for US dollars through Circle. An older bridged version, labeled USDbC, came from Ethereum and is not issued by Circle. Circle warns that USDbC should not be sent to a Circle Mint account. Check the token contract before sending. For more on stablecoins, see USDT vs USDC.

Does Base have a token?

As of October 2026, no. Coinbase's help page warns that scammers may send fake Base tokens. In September 2025, The Block reported that Base creator Jesse Pollak said the network was beginning to explore a native token, with no definitive plans. A CoinDesk opinion piece from January 2026 confirmed none had launched, and the 2026 strategy coverage does not mention one. Until an official announcement, treat unsolicited Base token airdrops as possible scams, as covered in what a crypto airdrop is.
