What is Enjin Coin and how does the Enjin Blockchain work?
Enjin Coin (ENJ) is the native token of the Enjin Blockchain, a network built for NFTs and games, used for fees, staking and backing NFTs with ENJ.
Enjin Coin, or ENJ, is the native token of the Enjin Blockchain, a network built specifically for NFTs and in-game items. Enjin describes ENJ as its minting and fuel token. The project comes from a gaming company that later moved into blockchain tools for game developers.
What is Enjin crypto's background?
Enjin was founded in 2009 by Maxim Blagov and Witek Radomski as a community platform for gamers, and it is based in Singapore. Since 2017 it has focused on blockchain gaming. That year it raised about $18.9 million by selling ENJ, then an ERC-20 token on Ethereum.
Radomski also proposed the ERC-1155 token standard, approved in 2019, which lets one smart contract manage fungible, non-fungible and semi-fungible tokens. That suits games, where a player may hold both a stack of identical coins and a one-of-a-kind sword. See what ERC-1155 is for more.
What is the Enjin Blockchain?
The Enjin Blockchain went live in 2023 and has two layers. The Enjin Relaychain is the base layer that handles security, node synchronization and block validation. It is built on Substrate, the open-source framework behind Polkadot, and Enjin says it will follow Polkadot's changes while developing in its own direction.
On top sit Matrixchains, which provide the NFT features. Each Matrixchain can be customized for a project and store its data separately. The first, the Efinity Matrixchain, is a fork of Efinity, Enjin's earlier Polkadot parachain. NFT functions are built into the protocol itself, so developers do not need to write their own token contracts.
As part of the move, ENJ was migrated from Ethereum to become the native token of the new chain on a 1:1 basis, and Enjin's older EFI token was merged into ENJ. Enjin's support pages explain that Ethereum ENJ, Ethereum EFI and Efinity Parachain EFI can be migrated. Ethereum tokens are burned and native ENJ is then claimed on a Matrixchain address. As of October 2026, check Enjin's support site for current migration options.
How do Enjin NFTs use ENJ?
ENJ is used to pay network fees and can be staked to help secure the network in return for ENJ rewards. Its most distinctive use is ENJ Infusion. A creator or owner can lock a chosen amount of ENJ inside an NFT or multi-unit token, either when it is created or later. The infused ENJ stays locked until the token is melted, which means burned, at which point the ENJ is released.
Enjin presents infusion as a way to give a token a base amount of ENJ backing, which can make buyers more confident about what an item contains. It does not set a market price for the NFT, and the value of the infused ENJ itself can rise or fall. For broader context on game assets, see what Web3 gaming is.
