What is Unichain and how does it work?
Unichain is an Ethereum layer 2 built by Uniswap Labs on the OP Stack. It uses ETH for gas, has one-second blocks and aims to make DeFi trading faster.
Unichain is an Ethereum layer 2 network created by Uniswap Labs, the company behind the Uniswap exchange. It is designed for decentralized finance, with fast blocks and cheaper trades than Ethereum's main chain. As of October 2026 it is part of the Superchain, the group of networks that share Optimism's technology.
What is Unichain crypto?
Unichain is a blockchain network rather than a new coin. Uniswap's developer docs describe it as a DeFi-focused layer 2 built on the OP Stack. That means it runs transactions off Ethereum and posts the results back to it, using the same open source toolkit described in what is Optimism?
Key facts from the docs:
- Mainnet chain ID: 130, with a Sepolia testnet at 1301.
- Block time: one second.
- Security: a Stage 1 rollup with a permissionless fault-proof system, meaning anyone can challenge an invalid state.
- Compatibility: equivalent to Ethereum's virtual machine, so standard tools and wallets work once pointed at Unichain.
Blockworks reported that the mainnet went live on February 11, 2025, about four months after it was announced.
What is Unichain ETH?
ETH is Unichain's native currency, listed in its network information as the token used to pay gas on both mainnet and testnet. Users bring ETH and other tokens over from Ethereum through Superbridge or third-party bridges, according to the docs. There is no separate Unichain gas token to buy.
How does Unichain work differently?
Most layer 2s rely on a single sequencer that decides transaction order. Unichain moved that job into a trusted execution environment, a sealed area of a processor that protects code from tampering. The Block reported on May 2, 2025 that it was the first Ethereum layer 2 to do this, using Rollup-Boost, software built with Flashbots.
According to Uniswap's blog, the builder orders transactions purely by priority fee and takes them from an encrypted private mempool. The goal is to reduce harmful MEV, such as traders being front-run.
On top of one-second blocks, Unichain streams Flashblocks. The docs say these give preconfirmations about every 200 milliseconds by sending partial block updates, without changing the chain's core consensus.
What is the link between Unichain and Uniswap's UNI?
UNI is not Unichain's gas token, but it is tied to the chain in two ways. First, the Uniswap Foundation announced a Unichain Validation Network, where node operators who stake UNI on Ethereum check the chain's state. Blockworks reported that 65% of net chain revenue was slated to go to these validators and stakers.
Second, under the UNIfication proposal passed in December 2025, The Block reported that Unichain's net sequencer fees are routed into the same system that buys and burns UNI. How that fee switch works across Uniswap is covered in the Uniswap guide.
