How many cryptocurrencies are there depends on what you count. As of October 2026, data site CoinGecko lists 22,295 coins, while CoinMarketCap ranks about 8,150 in its main listing. If you include every token ever launched on a blockchain, the figure runs into the millions, though most of those are no longer traded.

How many crypto coins are there?

Each data site decides which assets to list, so their counts differ:

  • CoinGecko: 22,295 coins on its homepage, checked in October 2026.
  • CoinMarketCap: about 8,150 entries in its main ranked table, checked the same month. Its header shows a much larger figure, about 63.9 million,, and the page does not explain the gap between the two.

Technically, a coin runs on its own blockchain and a token runs on another chain, as explained in coin vs token. Data sites usually lump both together under "cryptocurrencies".

How many crypto tokens are there?

Creating a token is cheap and fast, so the total is enormous. CoinGecko data reported by Forklog and Crowdfund Insider in January 2026 shows the number of projects tracked by its GeckoTerminal service grew from 428,383 in 2021 to about 20.2 million by the end of 2025. Easy launch platforms for meme coins drove much of that growth. See how is a cryptocurrency created and what is a meme coin.

Most do not last. CoinGecko found 53.2% of the cryptocurrencies it has recorded have failed, with about 11.6 million failing in 2025 alone, many in the fourth quarter after the October 2025 market crash.

How many crypto exchanges are there?

Again, it depends on the source and the type of exchange. As of October 2026:

  • CoinGecko shows 1,507 exchanges in total in its site header. Its decentralized exchange page lists 772 DEXs, and its main exchange table lists 160.
  • CoinMarketCap says it tracks 236 spot exchanges, and its homepage header shows 981 exchanges.

The totals differ because each site decides for itself which platforms to include and how to group them, and the pages themselves do not reconcile their figures. For how the major platforms work, see what is a crypto exchange.

Why do crypto counts keep changing?

Millions of new tokens appeared in 2024 and 2025 alone, according to CoinGecko's research, and millions of others stopped trading. Any figure is a snapshot, so check the date and the source when you see a number quoted.
