What does hopium mean in crypto?

Hopium blends hope and opium. In crypto it mocks unrealistic optimism that a price will rise, while copium describes excuses made after a loss.

Hopium meaning in slang is unrealistic optimism. The word joins hope and opium, suggesting someone is high on hope rather than looking at the facts. Crypto traders use it, often teasingly, about bullish predictions that seem to have little support.

What does hopium mean in slang?

Grammarphobia cites Collins, which defines hopium as a substance said to be taken by people who keep an unrealistically optimistic outlook. It notes that Collins lists both hopium and copium, while Merriam-Webster lists only copium, and both label the words slang.

The word is older than the internet. Word Histories found hope-ium in the London magazine Fun in February 1864 and in The Tomahawk in May 1870. Grammarphobia says it became more common in the early 2000s, and Word Histories notes that from 2008 it was applied to the hope theme of Barack Obama's campaign.

What does hopium mean in crypto?

In crypto, hopium describes hope for a gain that has not happened and may have no real reason to. Phemex gives an example along the lines of claiming a coin is heading to a big round number before anything supports it.

You will see it in a few ways:

  • As self-mockery, when someone admits they are running on hopium after a dip
  • As a jab at overly bullish posts or price targets
  • As a label for a mood, such as a market full of hopium after a short rally

The word sits close to other sentiment slang like FUD and FOMO and WAGMI.

What is the hopium vs copium meaning?

Copium is the partner term. Dictionary.com defines it as a metaphorical substance that shows someone is fooling themselves to cope with a loss or hard truth. Grammarphobia traces the word to a 2003 album title and says it spread through a 4chan meme in July 2019.

Phemex draws the line this way. Hopium is about a gain that has not arrived yet. Copium is the excuses made once a loss is already visible, such as calling a steep drop a discount or a missed exit conviction.

Why does the term matter for traders?

Hopium is a joke, but it names a real habit. Phemex points out that losses get harder to recover as they deepen. A 50% fall needs a 100% gain just to break even, and a 90% fall needs 900%. Leverage can also force a position closed before any rebound arrives.
