What does it mean to mint crypto?
Minting crypto means creating new tokens or NFTs on a blockchain, usually by a smart contract call that adds them to a wallet and raises the total supply.
Minting crypto means creating new digital assets on a blockchain. A smart contract issues the new token or NFT, records the wallet that receives it and updates the total supply. The word borrows from the way a government mint stamps new coins. The opposite action, removing tokens permanently, is a token burn.
What does it mean to mint an NFT?
OpenSea defines minting as writing a digital item to the blockchain, creating a record of its ownership and authenticity that cannot be edited. The person who mints becomes the NFT's first owner. On Ethereum, the ERC-721 standard records a newly minted NFT as a transfer from the zero address, a placeholder showing the token did not exist before.
In crypto slang, "the mint" also means a collection's launch sale, when buyers pay a set price to mint items directly from the project's contract. OpenSea compares joining a mint to opening a pack of trading cards, since you may not get a rare item. Each mint is a blockchain transaction, so it costs a gas fee. Step-by-step instructions for creators are in how to create an NFT.
What does it mean to mint a token?
For fungible tokens such as an ERC-20 token, minting adds new units to someone's balance and raises the total supply. OpenZeppelin, which publishes widely used contract templates, notes that the ERC-20 standard does not say how supply is created. Each project decides. Common patterns include:
- Fixed supply. The whole supply is minted once, when the contract is deployed, and no more can be created.
- Ongoing minting. The contract keeps a function that creates new tokens, for example as rewards. Who controls that function matters, because whoever holds it can increase supply.
That is why researchers look at mint permissions when reading a project's tokenomics. A contract that lets one wallet mint without limit can dilute every other holder.
What does it mean to mint a stablecoin?
For a fiat-backed stablecoin, minting means issuing new coins against money deposited with the issuer. Circle, which issues USDC, runs a service called Circle Mint for this. An approved customer deposits dollars from a linked bank account, receives newly issued USDC and can send it to blockchain wallets. Circle says USDC and its euro coin EURC redeem one for one for the backing currency. Circle Mint serves institutions such as exchanges, banks and trading firms, not individual users. More detail is in how to convert USDC to USD.
Is minting the same as mining?
Not quite. Mining and staking are how some blockchains create their native coins as rewards for securing the network, as described in how does bitcoin mining work. Minting usually refers to tokens and NFTs created by a smart contract on an existing chain. Be cautious with links promising early or free mints, since fake mint pages are a common way to trick people into signing harmful wallet approvals.
