Not as an individual. Circle says USDC is redeemable one for one for dollars, but direct redemption runs through Circle Mint, which serves exchanges, institutional traders and banks. On Coinbase, the conversion itself is free for most people as of October 2026. Coinbase charges a 0.10% processing fee only on net conversions above $5 million within a rolling 30-day window. Net means the USDC you convert to USD or PYUSD minus what you convert the other way. Cointelegraph reported that this threshold took effect on August 13, 2025, down from $40 million.
Separate costs can still apply. Coinbase says a cash-out fee may depend on the payment method, and standard transaction fees apply to instant cashouts. Other platforms set their own fees and spreads, which what are crypto fees explains.
Tax is a separate question. The IRS lists stablecoins as digital assets. Selling a digital asset for US dollars is a transaction that must be reported on a US return, even if it produces little or no gain or loss.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
