What happens if you get liquidated in crypto?

If you get liquidated in crypto, the exchange closes your leveraged position, you lose its margin plus a fee, and on some platforms you can still owe a deficit.

If you get liquidated in crypto, the exchange's risk system forcibly closes your leveraged position because your collateral has fallen too low. You lose the margin backing it and usually pay a fee. Why leverage leads here is covered in what crypto futures and leverage are. This guide covers what happens next, as of October 2026.

What happens when you are liquidated?

It happens in stages. Coinbase's help pages say that once your margin balance drops below the initial margin requirement, orders that would add risk may be cancelled and new ones blocked. When the balance no longer covers the maintenance margin, its engine begins reducing the position step by step until the account meets the requirement again. Depending on the market, some or all positions can be closed. A warning may arrive first, but Coinbase says not to rely on one.

Costs follow. Kraken's US futures page lists liquidation fees of $10 for perpetual futures accounts, and $25 for a first and $50 for later liquidations in accounts trading CME futures. It may also limit the account afterwards. On Bybit, a liquidated position settles at its bankruptcy price, where no margin is left. If the trade is actually closed at a better price, the leftover margin goes to Bybit's insurance fund, not back to the trader.

What is a liquidation price?

The liquidation price is the market price at which your margin falls to the maintenance level and forced closing begins. It sits before the bankruptcy price, the point where all margin is gone. That gap gives the exchange room to close the trade before losses exceed your collateral.

The exact level depends on your leverage, position size and margin mode, a choice explained in cross margin vs isolated margin.

Do you owe money after liquidation?

It depends on the platform. Coinbase says liquidation does not guarantee losses stop before a balance turns negative.

  • US futures. Kraken's disclosure says you can lose more than your initial investment and remain responsible for any deficiency after liquidation.
  • EU retail customers. Coinbase says negative balance protection is mandatory for retail customers in the European Economic Area. If a flash crash pushes an account below zero, Coinbase covers the shortfall and resets it to zero.
  • Insurance funds. Bybit uses its insurance fund to cover losses beyond a trader's margin, so the trader does not pay the gap.

The broader question of losses beyond your deposit is covered in can you lose more than you invest in crypto.

What happens when many traders are liquidated at once?

Insurance funds can run dry. Bybit says losses beyond what the fund can absorb are covered by auto-deleveraging, which closes profitable positions held by other traders.

That happened on a large scale on October 10, 2025. FTI Consulting estimates more than $19 billion of crypto leverage was liquidated in about a day after a tariff threat hit markets. Order books thinned, some exchange screens froze, and auto-deleveraging closed some well-hedged positions, leaving those traders exposed.

Crypto prices are volatile, and leveraged trading can lose money faster than buying outright.
