What is Morpho crypto and how does it work?
Morpho crypto is a lending protocol where anyone can create isolated loan markets and curated vaults spread deposits across them, governed by the MORPHO token.
Morpho crypto refers to Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol that lets people lend and borrow crypto through smart contracts. Its docs describe it as a lending building block with permissionless market creation, meaning anyone can set up a new market without approval. MORPHO is the token used to govern it. What is Morpho Blue?
Morpho Blue is the name for Morpho's basic lending markets. Each market is defined by five settings: a collateral asset, a loan asset, a liquidation loan-to-value (LLTV), an oracle that prices the collateral and an interest rate model.
The LLTV is the borrowing limit. At 80%, for example, $100 of collateral supports up to $80 of debt. If a borrower goes past that line, anyone can liquidate the position by repaying part of the debt in exchange for collateral at a discount. Morpho's docs say each market is isolated, so risk stays inside it, and its settings cannot be changed after creation. Market creators must pick the LLTV and rate model from options approved by Morpho governance.
What are Morpho Vaults?
Most lenders do not pick individual markets. Instead they deposit into Morpho Vaults, which route funds to different markets. Each vault has a curator, who chooses which markets it can use, sets caps and fees, and makes most changes behind a time delay. An allocator moves funds day to day, and a sentinel role can cut risk quickly.
This adds a layer of trust. Morpho's docs note that vault performance depends on the curator's choices, and that withdrawals can be delayed if not enough funds are idle.
How is Morpho different from Aave?
Aave and similar protocols mostly run one large pool per asset, so risk is shared across all borrowers and collateral types, as Portals explains. Morpho splits lending into many small isolated markets and leaves risk choices to market creators and vault curators. Morpho's earlier product, the Morpho Optimizer, ran on top of Aave and Compound.
Morpho also works behind other apps. On January 16, 2025, Coinbase launched bitcoin-backed loans that run on Morpho, according to The Block. Customers' bitcoin is converted into cbBTC and used as collateral on Morpho on the Base network, and they borrow USDC. At launch, loans were capped at $100,000, rates were variable and set by Morpho, and collateral was liquidated if the loan reached 86% of its value.
What are Morpho Labs and the MORPHO token?
Morpho Labs is the company behind Morpho. The Defiant reported in June 2025 that Morpho Labs became a subsidiary of the Morpho Association. MORPHO has a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens and became transferable on November 21, 2024, per Morpho's docs. Holders vote on governance decisions. Details are current as of October 2026.
