What is The Sandbox crypto and what is SAND used for?
The Sandbox crypto is SAND, the token of a blockchain game world where players buy LAND NFTs, trade creations, stake and vote on the platform's direction.
The Sandbox crypto is SAND, the token behind The Sandbox, a voxel-style virtual world where people create games and items and own them on a blockchain. The project began as a planned player-owned world, with its own creation tools and a marketplace. As of October 2026 it describes itself as a platform to play games and build worlds, including with AI tools, and it is part of Animoca Brands.
What is SAND crypto?
SAND is the cryptocurrency used in The Sandbox. The 2020 white paper set it up as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, the common standard explained in what is an ERC-20 token. The white paper's allocation table gives a 600 million SAND company reserve as 20% of supply, which implies a total of about 3 billion tokens.
The white paper also planned a 5% fee on SAND transaction volume, with half going to a staking pool and half to a foundation that funds grants for creators and games. The platform's blog shows SAND now also exists on other networks, including Base and BNB Smart Chain.
What is The Sandbox crypto used for?
According to The Sandbox's documentation, people with a connected wallet can use SAND to:
- buy and sell items in the Sandbox Marketplace
- stake it to earn rewards
- take part in governance decisions about the platform
The white paper planned for governance to run through a DAO, a structure covered in what is a DAO.
Two free tools sit alongside the token. VoxEdit is software for making voxel art and 3D items, and Game Maker is a no-code tool for building experiences. The Sandbox says you do not need LAND to create and share a free experience. Items made this way can be minted as NFTs called ASSETS, which the white paper set up as ERC-1155 tokens.
Running on several networks also brings risk. The Sandbox blog lists a post-mortem on an exploit on August 22 2026 that affected Base and BNB Smart Chain, followed by a compensation plan for affected users.
What is a Sandbox LAND NFT?
LAND is a piece of the virtual map. Each LAND is an NFT, using the ERC-721 standard, and the white paper's map measured 408 by 408 parcels, or 166,464 LANDs in total. Owners can build on their parcels, change them and publish experiences that other players can enter directly from the experience page.
Owning LAND is mainly about having space to build and publish within the world. The Sandbox is often cited as an example of a metaverse world, explained in more detail in what is the metaverse. For how blockchain games use tokens and NFTs more broadly, see what is web3 gaming.
