Is XRP a replacement for SWIFT?

XRP is not a replacement for SWIFT today. Swift carries payment messages between banks, while Ripple uses XRP as a bridge currency in some payments.

XRP is not a replacement for SWIFT, at least not today, though the comparison comes up often. Swift is a messaging network that banks use to send each other payment instructions. XRP is a digital asset that Ripple, a payments company, uses in one of its products to move value between currencies. They compete for part of the same job, cross-border payments, but they solve it in different ways. For background on the coin, see what is XRP.

How does Swift work?

Swift was founded in 1973 and is a cooperative owned by its member shareholders under Belgian law. Its own site says it connects more than 11,500 banks, financial institutions and companies in over 220 countries and territories.

Swift does not move money itself. It carries secure messages that tell banks what to pay. The funds then move through the banks' own accounts with each other. Swift says it handles over 53 million messages a day on average, and that 90% of cross-border payments on its network reach the recipient's bank in under an hour.

How does Ripple Payments ODL work?

Ripple sells software called Ripple Payments for institutions sending money across borders. Its documentation says one feature, On-Demand Liquidity (ODL), uses XRP as a bridge currency. A sender's money is converted into XRP, moved across the XRP Ledger, and converted into the destination currency, so the firm does not need money parked in accounts in each market. Ripple says ODL runs around the clock, every day of the year.

XRP transactions settle in about 3 to 5 seconds, according to xrpl.org. Ripple has also added its own stablecoin, RLUSD, to Ripple Payments. Its April 2025 release said two payment providers were using RLUSD for cross-border transfers with some customers.

Ripple vs Swift, what is the difference?

  • What it is: Swift is a messaging network owned by its members. Ripple is a private company, and XRP is a digital asset on a public ledger.
  • What moves: Swift carries instructions, and banks settle funds separately. With ODL, the value itself travels across the ledger as XRP.
  • Pre-funding: Traditional cross-border banking relies on accounts held in other countries. ODL is designed to avoid that.

Many Ripple customers use its software without XRP, as the guide on XRP notes, so Ripple's growth does not always mean more XRP use.

Can XRP replace Swift?

Nothing points to that as of October 2026. Swift still links over 11,500 institutions, and it is adopting blockchain technology on its own terms. On September 29, 2025, Swift announced it would add a blockchain-based shared ledger to its infrastructure, designed with over 30 financial institutions and starting with a prototype built with Consensys. Its first use is real-time, 24/7 cross-border payments.

That means Swift and crypto networks may end up linked rather than one simply replacing the other. For how individuals send crypto abroad, see can you send crypto to another country.
