No, XRP is not a stablecoin. XRP is the native digital currency of the XRP Ledger, and its price moves with the market. A stablecoin is a token designed to hold a fixed value, usually one US dollar, backed by reserves held by an issuer.

What is the difference between XRP and RLUSD?

The confusion is understandable because Ripple, the company closely associated with XRP, also issues a stablecoin called Ripple USD, or RLUSD. The two do very different jobs.

XRP was created when the ledger launched, with a total of 100 billion XRP, according to the XRP Ledger docs. Nobody promises to redeem it for a fixed amount of money. Ripple describes XRP as the ledger's native asset for transaction fees and liquidity, and says it can act as a bridge between currencies on the built-in exchange.

RLUSD, by contrast, is issued under a New York Department of Financial Services trust charter. Ripple says each token is backed 1:1 by cash, US Treasuries and government money market funds, with monthly third-party attestations. It is meant to stay at one dollar. As of October 2026, it runs on the XRP Ledger, Ethereum and other chains.

Is Ethereum a stablecoin?

No. Ether (ETH) is the native currency of Ethereum and its price is not fixed. ethereum.org describes stablecoins as Ethereum tokens built to stay at a fixed value even when the price of ETH changes. In other words, many stablecoins live on Ethereum, but ETH itself is not one of them.

Is Bitcoin a stablecoin?

No. Bitcoin.org says the price of a bitcoin is set by supply and demand and that its exchange rate floats freely. It is not backed by a reserve of dollars and is not pegged to any currency. Bitcoin's supply is capped at 21 million coins, but a fixed supply does not create a fixed price.

How does USDC compare with XRP?

USDC is a dollar stablecoin issued by Circle. Circle says it is backed fully by cash and cash-equivalent assets and can be redeemed 1:1 for US dollars. Native USDC went live on the XRP Ledger in June 2025, so the same network now carries both XRP and dollar stablecoins.

The key differences are simple:

  • Issuer. USDC and RLUSD each have a company that holds reserves and redeems tokens. XRP has no issuer making that promise.
  • Price goal. Stablecoins aim to stay at $1. XRP has no target price.
  • Role on the ledger. XRP pays transaction fees and account reserves on the XRP Ledger. Stablecoins are tokens issued on top of it.
