What is a trading pair in crypto?

A crypto trading pair is a market linking two assets, such as BTC/USDT, where the price shows how much of the second asset buys one unit of the first.

A crypto trading pair is a market that lets you exchange one asset directly for another, written like BTC/USDT or ETH/BTC. Every trade on an exchange happens inside a pair. Knowing which side is which tells you what you are paying with, what you are receiving and how the price is quoted.

What is a trading pair in crypto?

Kraken's trading glossary explains that two currencies can only be traded against each other if a market links them, and that market is the pair. If an exchange lists SOL/USD and SOL/BTC but not SOL/EUR, you cannot swap SOL straight into euros there. You would sell into one of the listed pairs first.

Each pair on a centralized exchange has its own order book, with its own buyers, sellers and spread. That is why the same coin can trade busily in one pair and thinly in another on the same exchange.

What are the base and quote currency?

The first asset in a pair is the base currency. The second is the quote currency. The price shows how much of the quote currency is needed to buy one unit of the base.

Kraken gives a simple example. If BTC/USD is priced at 1,000, then 1,000 US dollars buys one bitcoin. Buying the pair means paying dollars to receive bitcoin. Selling the pair means giving up bitcoin to receive dollars. At that price, 0.5 BTC costs 500 USD to buy and returns 500 USD when sold.

The same logic works when both sides are crypto. In ETH/BTC, ether is the base and bitcoin is the quote, so the price shows how many bitcoin one ether costs.

What does the BTC/USDT pair mean?

BTC/USDT is bitcoin priced in Tether's USDT, a stablecoin designed to track the US dollar. Buying BTC/USDT means spending USDT to get bitcoin, and selling it means receiving USDT.

Many exchanges use stablecoins as quote currencies, so pairs priced in USDT or USDC appear alongside pairs priced in national currencies like USD or EUR. Because each pair is a separate market with its own buyers and sellers, a coin's price in a stablecoin pair and in a dollar pair can differ slightly at any moment.

What is a new pair in crypto?

On a decentralized exchange, there is usually no order book. Uniswap explains that each of its pools holds reserves of two tokens, and that anyone can create a new market on its own. Creating a pool for a fresh token and a common asset, such as wrapped ether, creates a new pair.

Tracking sites show these as they appear. DEX Screener says tokens are listed automatically as soon as they are added to a liquidity pool and have a trade. Automatic listing is not a check of the token or its creators. Some brand-new pairs belong to scam tokens, such as rug pulls where the creators withdraw the pool. Listing practices differ by platform, so these details reflect how they work as of October 2026.
