What is a gas limit?

A gas limit is the most gas a transaction or block may use on Ethereum. It caps the amount of work, while the gas price sets the cost of each unit.

A gas limit is the maximum amount of gas a transaction or a block is allowed to consume on Ethereum. Gas measures computing work, so the limit is a count of units, not money. There is one for your own transaction and one for each block.

What is the difference between gas limit vs gas price?

The gas limit is how many units of work a transaction may use. The gas price is what you pay for each unit, made up of the base fee plus a tip, and quoted in gwei. ethereum.org puts the fee as gas used multiplied by the price per unit.

Setting a higher limit does not make a transaction faster or raise the price per unit. It only allows more work, and gas left unused is refunded. A plain ETH transfer needs 21,000 gas, while calls to smart contracts need more. How prices are set is covered in what are gas fees and what is gwei.

What causes an out of gas error?

An out of gas error means the transaction hit its gas limit before it finished. ethereum.org says the network then reverses everything the transaction tried to do, yet the gas used up to that point is still charged. A limit too low even for the basic checks is different. Such a transaction is rejected before it reaches a block and costs nothing. A separate error, where the wallet cannot pay the fee at all, is explained in insufficient funds for gas.

What is the block gas limit?

The block gas limit caps the total gas of all transactions in one block, which bounds how much work each block asks of the computers that check it. As of October 2026, ethereum.org lists it at 60 million gas, with a target of 30 million. The base fee rises when blocks run above the target and falls when they run below it.

Validators control the limit. Each block can move it up or down by at most 1/1024 of the previous block's limit, so changes are gradual. The Block explains that once more than half of validators signal a higher limit, it climbs automatically, with no hard fork needed. It reported that the limit doubled from 15 million to 30 million in 2021, rose to 36 million in February 2025 and reached 45 million on July 22, 2025. Cointelegraph reported that in November 2025 enough validators signaled 60 million to start the next rise, and the Fusaka upgrade made 60 million the default in client software.

Is there a maximum gas limit per transaction?

Yes. Since Fusaka went live on December 3, 2025, EIP-7825 caps any single transaction at 16,777,216 gas, which is 2 to the power of 24. Transactions above the cap are refused, and a block that contains one is invalid. The aim is to stop one huge transaction from dominating a block as block limits grow. ethereum.org notes that regular transactions are far below the cap, though very large contract deployments or batch operations may need to be split.
