What is LayerZero crypto and how does it work?

LayerZero is an omnichain messaging protocol that lets apps send data and tokens between blockchains, with security checked by verifier networks called DVNs.

LayerZero is a crypto protocol that carries messages between blockchains, so an app on one chain can trigger an action on another. It calls itself an omnichain messaging protocol. LayerZero is not a single bridge or exchange. It is plumbing that many apps and token issuers build on.

What is LayerZero crypto and how do messages move?

Every supported blockchain has a LayerZero endpoint, a smart contract that acts as the entry and exit point for messages. According to LayerZero's docs, these endpoints cannot be upgraded once deployed, so their core code cannot be changed later.

When an app sends a message, two kinds of off-chain workers take part. Verifiers check that the message is genuine, and executors deliver it to the destination chain. Execution is permissionless, so anyone can deliver a message once it has been verified.

What is a LayerZero DVN?

DVN stands for Decentralized Verifier Network. Each DVN independently checks a fingerprint of the message, called the payload hash, and reports it to the destination chain. Different DVNs can use different methods, and some connect to outside systems such as a chain's native bridge.

Apps combine DVNs into what LayerZero calls a security stack. They can name required DVNs, which must all agree, plus optional DVNs, of which a set number must agree. LayerZero says anyone can run a DVN, and its listed providers include Google Cloud, Polyhedra and LayerZero Labs. If an app does not set its own configuration, a default applies, and the docs warn that defaults can change without notice and advise apps to set their DVNs explicitly.

What is a LayerZero OFT and LayerZero bridge?

OFT stands for Omnichain Fungible Token, a token standard built on LayerZero. When an OFT moves from one chain to another, tokens are burned on the source chain and minted on the destination, or locked and unlocked for existing tokens, so the total supply stays the same across all chains.

When people talk about a "LayerZero bridge", they usually mean an app or token that uses LayerZero messaging and the OFT standard to move value between chains, rather than one central bridge service. For the general risks of moving assets between chains, see what a crypto bridge is.

What is the LayerZero coin?

The LayerZero coin is ZRO, launched in June 2024 with a total supply of 1 billion tokens. Its airdrop drew attention for two reasons. First, the team worked with analytics firms to filter out sybil wallets, meaning many addresses run by the same person to farm rewards. Founder Bryan Pellegrino said about 1.28 million of 6 million addresses that had used the protocol were eligible. Second, claimers had to donate $0.10 per token in USDC, USDT or ETH to Protocol Guild, a fund for Ethereum core developers, a step LayerZero called proof of donation.

As of October 2026, check LayerZero's own documentation for current token and governance details, as they can change.
