Why is Telegram popular in crypto?

Telegram is popular in crypto because it hosts huge groups and channels, supports bots and is tied to the TON blockchain, but scams are common there.

Telegram is popular in crypto because it gives projects a free way to reach very large audiences, lets developers build bots and apps inside the chat, and is closely tied to the TON blockchain. Founder Pavel Durov said in March 2025 that the app had more than 1 billion active users. That reach makes it a hub for announcements, trading talk and support, and also a favourite place for fraud.

Why do crypto people use Telegram?

Mainly for scale. Telegram's FAQ says a group can have up to 200,000 members and a channel can have an unlimited number of subscribers. Many projects run an official announcement channel plus a chat group where holders ask questions. Traders follow channels for news and market commentary, often in many languages at once.

Some users also see Telegram as a private option, but privacy has limits. The FAQ says regular cloud chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, but only Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted.

Why does crypto use Telegram for bots and apps?

Telegram has an open Bot API, so developers can build bots that post price alerts, check wallet activity or run trading tools inside a chat. Mini Apps go further, running full apps and games in the messenger. The FAQ advises treating any bot as a stranger, since a bot sees what you send it.

The link with TON is the other big reason. Telegram integrated the TON blockchain and wallets so users can tip creators and pay inside Mini Apps, TechCrunch reported. On January 21, 2025, Telegram and the TON Foundation said TON would be the exclusive blockchain for Mini Apps, TON Connect the only way to link them to wallets, and Toncoin the only token for Telegram Stars and ad payments, Cointelegraph reported. See what is Toncoin for how that network works.

Are crypto Telegram groups safe?

Many are not. The CFTC warns that by default anyone with your phone number can add you to a group. Scammers use this to pitch so-called cooperative trading projects with promised returns of 100% to 1,000% and fake testimonials from other members. These are often pump and dump schemes. The CFTC also warns of messages pretending to come from banks, police or regulators.

Common warning signs include admins who message you first, links to unfamiliar exchanges or wallet sites, and any request for your seed phrase, which no genuine project needs. The CFTC's advice is to not reply, block and report the sender, check any firm's registration, and confirm urgent claims through the organization's official website.
