Can you change your seed phrase?

You cannot change a seed phrase on an existing wallet. To change seed phrase, you create a new wallet with new words and move your funds across to it.

You cannot change the seed phrase of a wallet that already exists. The seed phrase is the master secret every key and address in the wallet is built from, so new words would mean new addresses. Changing it really means setting up a new wallet and moving the funds.

Why can you not change a seed phrase?

The words encode the wallet itself. Ledger's glossary says seed phrases are generated when a user first sets up a wallet, and Trezor says a missing backup cannot be regenerated in any way. Its stated remedy is to create a new wallet with a new backup and move the funds.

Coins left at the old addresses stay reachable by anyone with the old words. Ledger's security checklist says someone with your seed phrase can access all of your accounts.

Can you change your seed phrase on Trezor or Ledger?

Not directly, but both support the move-and-replace method. Trezor's guide covers three routes, for when a backup is lost or may be compromised:

  • A second hardware wallet. Set it up with a new backup, check the backup, then send funds from the old wallet to its addresses.
  • One device only. Check the old backup, wipe the device, set up a new wallet and note its receiving addresses, wipe again, restore the old wallet, send the funds, then wipe once more and restore with the new backup.
  • A third-party wallet app. Trezor describes this as an emergency-only stopgap, since the funds pass through a less secure environment.

Trezor advises dating the new backup before destroying the old one. Ledger's Academy describes the phrase as created at wallet setup and notes that the same phrase can be loaded into another hardware device. In other words, a phrase belongs to a wallet, not to a device, so on a Ledger too a new phrase only comes from setting up a new wallet and moving funds to it.

Can you change your seed phrase on Trust Wallet?

The same applies to the Trust Wallet app. Its support article on compromised wallets, dated July 2026, says to create a new wallet with a new secret phrase written on paper and to transfer remaining funds right away. It also says not to reuse the old phrase, PIN or passwords, and to treat the old wallet as permanently exposed.

What should you do if your seed phrase is exposed?

Trezor says to act at once, even if the backup may only be misplaced. Trust Wallet lists these steps:

  • Make sure the device is free of malware first, or use a different device.
  • Create the new wallet and move funds immediately, starting with a small test amount if time allows, as Trezor suggests.
  • Revoke token approvals given to suspicious apps, which stops future misuse but cannot undo past transfers.
  • Secure linked email and cloud accounts and report any theft.

Trust Wallet also states that it cannot recover stolen funds. If money has already gone, see what to do if you are scammed.
