How do you set up a crypto wallet?
To set up a crypto wallet, install an official wallet app, create a new wallet, write down the recovery phrase offline, then use it to receive and send crypto.
Creating a crypto wallet means installing wallet software, generating a new set of keys and saving the backup that lets you restore them. The steps below follow the official help pages of MetaMask and Trust Wallet as of October 2026, and most self-custody wallets work the same way. If you are not sure what a wallet actually holds, start with what a crypto wallet is.
How do you create a crypto wallet?
- Get the app from the official source. Download it through the wallet maker's own website or its verified app store listing, so you know you have the genuine app.
- Choose "Create a new wallet." Trust Wallet then asks for a 6-digit passcode or biometrics. MetaMask lets you secure the wallet with a Secret Recovery Phrase, or with a Google, Apple or Telegram login plus a strong password.
- Back up the recovery phrase. MetaMask generates a 12-word phrase that should be copied exactly and stored offline. Trust Wallet lets you back up manually by writing the 12 words on paper, and advises doing this before you add any funds.
- Store the backup safely. Both companies warn against screenshots or storing the phrase online. Learn more in what a seed phrase is.
How do you open a Bitcoin wallet?
Bitcoin.org's getting started page breaks it into four steps: learn how Bitcoin differs from ordinary money, choose a wallet for your device, get some bitcoin, then spend it. A phone wallet suits everyday payments, while a desktop wallet suits paying online. The setup itself mirrors the steps above, with a recovery phrase created at the start.
For larger sums, Bitcoin.org suggests offline storage such as a hardware wallet, which can be restored from its backup if the device is lost.
How do you use a crypto wallet?
To receive crypto, open the wallet's receive screen and copy your wallet address or show its QR code. To send, paste the recipient's address, pick the right network, review the amount and fee, and confirm. It is worth sending a small test amount first when you use a new address, and checking the full address before you confirm.
What security steps should you take after setup?
Bitcoin.org recommends a strong password, regular backups kept in more than one physical place, software updates, and keeping only small amounts on a phone or computer. MetaMask notes that it does not send emails when you create or unlock a wallet, so any such email is a scam. Trust Wallet says anyone asking for your secret phrase, including someone posing as its support team, is trying to steal your funds. Fake wallet sites and messages are covered in crypto phishing and wallet drainers.
