What is trading volume in crypto?
Crypto trading volume is the total value of a coin traded over a period, usually the last 24 hours, and shows how active its market is.
Crypto trading volume is the total value of a cryptocurrency bought and sold during a given period. Data sites such as CoinMarketCap show it as a dollar figure for the last 24 hours, added up across the exchanges they track. It is a rough measure of how much interest and activity there is in a coin's market.
What is 24 hour trading volume in cryptocurrency?
Because crypto trades around the clock, there is no closing bell to reset the count. The 24-hour figure is a rolling window that always covers the most recent 24 hours.
CoinMarketCap explains how it builds the number. Each exchange reports the volume for each trading pair, such as LTC/BTC, in that pair's quote currency. The site converts it to dollars using its own reference prices, then adds up the pairs. Its coin-level figure covers spot trading only. Pairs with clear statistical oddities are left out of that total, and an adjusted exchange figure also leaves out markets with zero fees.
What is a high trading volume in crypto?
There is no fixed threshold. Fidelity advises comparing current volume with a benchmark, such as the average of earlier days, weeks or months. A coin trading twice its usual amount is busy for that coin, whatever the dollar size.
Technical analysts treat volume as a check on price. Fidelity notes that a rise on heavy volume is seen as more convincing than the same rise on light volume, which can lack conviction. Volume bars on a chart, covered in how to read a crypto chart, show this period by period.
Reported volume is not always real. In March 2019, the asset manager Bitwise told US regulators that about 95% of reported bitcoin spot volume looked artificial, with 71 of 81 exchanges it studied showing suspect patterns. CoinMarketCap now says this kind of wash trading is far less common than in 2017 to 2019, but it still filters for it.
How are market cap and volume in crypto related?
Market cap is a snapshot of size, price times circulating supply. Volume is a flow of activity over time. A large coin can have modest volume on a quiet day, and a small coin can trade many times its market cap during a frenzy. Some traders compare the two as a ratio, but neither number on its own says how easily a large order can be filled.
What is transaction volume vs trading volume?
Trading volume counts trades matched on exchanges, where a buyer and a seller swap one asset for another. Transaction volume counts transfers recorded on-chain, such as coins moving between wallets.
On-chain figures have their own problems. A Bank for International Settlements working paper, reported in September 2026, found that estimates of bitcoin's on-chain transfer value can differ by up to six times depending on method. One reason is change outputs, where leftover coins return to the sender and can be counted as if they were a payment. The researchers called on-chain indicators noisy approximations of real activity.
