Can crypto be frozen?

Yes, crypto can be frozen by an exchange that holds it or by a stablecoin issuer, but coins in your own wallet have no company that can lock them.

Frozen crypto is crypto you own but cannot move, sell or withdraw because a company has locked it. Whether crypto can be frozen depends on who controls it: an exchange account, a token issuer, or only you.

What does frozen crypto mean?

There are two main kinds of freeze. The first happens at a platform. A crypto exchange holds the keys to customers' coins, so it can stop an account from sending or withdrawing.

The second happens on the token itself. Some tokens, mainly stablecoins, are built so the issuer can block an address. Once blocked, the tokens there cannot be transferred.

A lender pausing all withdrawals is a different situation, covered in what happens if a crypto lender freezes withdrawals.

Can Coinbase freeze your account?

Yes. Coinbase says it may restrict an account because of suspected malicious activity, a problem during account recovery, or a request from the customer. It also says it may restrict sends to protect against losses from transactions that cannot be reversed.

Its help pages say reviews usually take up to 10 business days, sometimes longer. During some restrictions, customers may still be able to convert crypto to cash and withdraw to a verified bank account. Completing the requested steps does not guarantee the restriction is lifted.

US firms also have legal duties. Under Treasury sanctions rules, a US person holding virtual currency that must be blocked has to deny all parties access to it and report it to the Office of Foreign Assets Control within 10 business days.

Can Tether freeze USDT?

Yes. The issuers of both large dollar stablecoins can freeze tokens, as the USDT vs USDC guide notes. Circle says it may block addresses it links to illegal activity and may have to freeze USDC under a valid legal order. It says blacklisting on-chain addresses is reserved for extraordinary circumstances.

In April 2026, Tether froze about $344 million in USDT across two Tron addresses, saying it acted in coordination with US sanctions officials and law enforcement. At the time, Tether said it had frozen more than $4.4 billion in assets overall.

Bitcoin and ether work differently. They have no issuer, so no company can block them in a wallet you control. The risk there is someone getting your keys, which is why the custodial vs non-custodial wallets choice matters.

Why is my crypto frozen?

Common reasons include a security flag on your account, unfinished identity checks under KYC rules, a sanctions or law enforcement match, or receiving funds linked to theft or fraud. Check official notices inside the app or website. Coinbase tells restricted customers never to share their password or two-step verification codes, and to ignore unsolicited offers to move assets off the platform.

Rules differ by country and platform and change often. Check the platform's official help pages or a qualified professional for your own situation.
