Is Kraken safe?

Is Kraken safe depends on the risk. It is a licensed, real exchange with proof of reserves, but it has had a bug exploit, insider data access and SEC action.

Whether Kraken is safe depends on which risk you mean: theft, account takeover, company failure or legal trouble. Kraken is a long-running, licensed exchange that holds customers' crypto for them, so the answer rests on how it stores that crypto, what it discloses and its record, set out here as of October 2026. Its products are covered in what Kraken is.

Is Kraken legit and real?

Yes. Kraken is the trading name of Payward, and its licensing page, updated September 30, 2026, lists a FinCEN money services business registration, a Wyoming special purpose depository institution, an SEC-registered broker-dealer and a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant in the US. In Europe it holds MiCA authorisation from the Central Bank of Ireland, and it is registered with the UK's FCA. It does not serve residents of New York or Maine.

Its security page lists FIDO2 passkeys, no SMS account recovery, email confirmation of new withdrawal addresses, a global settings lock, ISO 27001 certification and a bug bounty. It says it uses both cold storage and hot wallets but gives no split. Fake sites that copy exchange login pages are a separate danger, covered in how to spot a fake crypto exchange.

Has Kraken been hacked?

Kraken has disclosed two notable incidents in recent years. In June 2024 it said a security researcher had used a bug to withdraw nearly $3 million from its treasury. Blockchain security firm CertiK identified itself as the researcher and said no user funds were at risk. Kraken's security chief confirmed on June 20, 2024 that the funds were returned, minus a small amount lost to fees, Cointelegraph reported.

In April 2026, Kraken said a criminal group was trying to extort it with videos of internal systems. It traced these to two cases, the first in February 2025, where support staff improperly viewed limited client data. About 2,000 accounts were potentially viewed, CoinDesk reported. Kraken said it would not pay and was working with law enforcement.

What does Kraken proof of reserves show?

Kraken publishes proof of reserves reviews by an independent accountant. Its June 30, 2026 snapshot listed ratios such as 102.9% for BTC, 100.5% for ETH and 102.3% for XRP. Clients can check their balance was counted using a Merkle tree tool in their account. Kraken's own page notes the review cannot prove funds were not borrowed, that keys were not duplicated, or that nothing was lost after the snapshot.

Is Kraken a good crypto exchange?

That depends on what a user needs, so here is the regulatory record instead of a rating. In February 2023 Kraken paid $30 million to settle SEC charges that its US staking program was an unregistered securities offering, and agreed to stop it, without admitting or denying the claims. The SEC sued Kraken again in November 2023, then dismissed that case with prejudice in March 2025 as part of its crypto policy review, saying this was not a judgement on the merits.
