In most cases you cannot buy a US bitcoin ETF in the UK as a retail investor, but you can buy the UK equivalent. Since October 8, 2025, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has allowed retail access to crypto exchange-traded notes, which track coins such as bitcoin and trade on a UK exchange like a share.

Can you buy a US bitcoin ETF in the UK?

Usually not. The well-known spot bitcoin ETFs trade on US exchanges. Robinhood's UK help page, for example, says UK customers cannot buy any ETFs listed in the US because of UK and European rules. Those rules require providers to give retail investors a key information document, and US-listed funds do not provide one.

When was the FCA crypto ETN retail ban lifted?

The FCA banned the sale of crypto ETNs and crypto derivatives to retail customers in January 2021. In March 2024 it allowed a UK-listed segment for professional investors only. It announced on August 1, 2025 that retail access would open, and the change took effect on October 8, 2025.

The conditions are:

  • The ETN must trade on an FCA-approved UK exchange, known as a Recognised Investment Exchange.
  • Financial promotion rules and the FCA's Consumer Duty apply to firms selling them.
  • There is no Financial Services Compensation Scheme cover.
  • The ban on crypto derivatives for retail customers stays in place.

How does a crypto ETN differ from an ETF?

An ETN is a debt security. You hold the issuer's promise to pay, not the coins themselves. justETF notes that UK-listed crypto ETNs trade on the London Stock Exchange, must be backed by collateral, and that collateral may not cover the full value if the issuer fails. Annual charges ranged from 0% to 2.5% at the time it wrote. The structural differences are covered in what a crypto ETP is, and the wider rules in who regulates crypto in the UK.

Can you hold a crypto ETN in an ISA?

Only in a specific type of ISA, as of October 2026. HMRC first allowed crypto ETNs in stocks and shares ISAs and registered pension schemes from October 8, 2025. It then set a change so that from April 6, 2026 they qualify only for the Innovative Finance ISA. ETNs bought in a stocks and shares ISA before that date are treated as Innovative Finance ISA investments, and HMRC said holders would not be forced to sell them.

In February 2026, Money to the Masses reported, citing Financial Times research, that no mainstream platform offered both crypto ETNs and an Innovative Finance ISA. HMRC says it will keep the stocks and shares ISA question under review. Crypto ETNs can still be bought in a general investment account, which does not have an ISA's tax shelter. The wider picture is in how crypto is taxed in the UK.
