What is Crypto.com and how does it work?
Crypto.com is a crypto platform founded in 2016 that runs a custodial app for buying crypto, an exchange, a Visa card and the self-custody Onchain wallet.
Crypto.com is a crypto platform where people buy, sell and hold digital assets through a mobile app, trade on an exchange, and spend with a crypto-linked card. It began in 2016 in Hong Kong as Monaco and took the Crypto.com name in 2018 after buying the domain. Its chief executive is co-founder Kris Marszalek. If the basics are new, start with what a crypto exchange is.
What is Crypto.com used for?
Most people use the Crypto.com App. As of October 2026, the company says the app has more than 150 million users and supports more than 400 tokens, including its own CRO token. Users can buy and sell with US dollars, stake some coins for rewards, and in the US use a Visa Signature credit card that pays rewards in CRO. Our guide to how crypto cards work explains such cards.
The app has widened beyond crypto. It added stock and ETF trading in 2025 and offers prediction markets in categories such as sports and economics, depending on where you live. The company also runs a separate exchange for more active traders.
What is the Crypto.com Onchain wallet?
The Onchain wallet, formerly named DeFi Wallet, is a separate app and browser extension that does not need a Crypto.com account. Crypto.com says keys are created on your device and are never stored on its servers, so the company cannot move or recover your funds. You back it up with a 12, 18 or 24-word recovery phrase, and losing it means losing access.
That is the key difference from the main app, where Crypto.com holds the keys for you. Our guide to custodial vs non-custodial wallets covers the trade-off.
Can you use Crypto.com in the US?
Yes, in most of the country. Crypto.com's help center lists the app as available in 49 states, Washington DC and US territories. New York is listed as a restricted state. Its prepaid debit card is not offered in the territories. Availability can change, so check the help page for where you live.
Is Crypto.com regulated?
Crypto.com holds a range of licenses and registrations. As of October 2026, its license page lists, in the US, a money services business registration, state money transmitter licenses, a broker-dealer registration, futures exchange and clearing licenses, and a conditionally approved national trust bank charter. Abroad, it lists a MiCA license in the European Economic Area, a major payment institution license in Singapore, licenses in Dubai and a UK registration.
The trust charter received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on February 23, 2026. The Block reported that this would let Crypto.com offer custody and staking under federal oversight once final. Separately, Crypto.com said in March 2025 that the SEC had closed an investigation into the company without bringing charges. A license does not make holdings risk-free, as explained in what happens if a crypto exchange goes bankrupt.
