DeFi vs CeFi, what is the difference?

The difference between DeFi and CeFi is who holds the money. In CeFi a company keeps custody, while in DeFi users keep their keys and use smart contracts.

The main difference between DeFi and CeFi is custody. In CeFi, short for centralized finance, a company holds your crypto and runs the service, much like a bank or broker. In DeFi, you keep the keys in your own wallet and interact directly with programs on a blockchain. Many products exist in both forms, from trading to lending.

What is CeFi?

CeFi covers crypto businesses that take customers' assets into their own accounts. Centralized exchanges, custodial wallets and crypto lending apps are the usual examples. You sign up, usually pass identity checks, and the firm keeps records of who owns what.

That structure brings customer support, password recovery and bank transfers. It also means the customer depends on the company. When the lender Celsius went bankrupt, a US bankruptcy court ruled in January 2023 that crypto in its Earn accounts belonged to Celsius under its terms of use. That left about 600,000 account holders as unsecured creditors. More on that risk is in what happens if a crypto exchange goes bankrupt.

What are the pros and cons of DeFi vs CeFi?

Ethereum.org sums up DeFi's case against traditional services. You hold your own money, markets never close, the rules are open for anyone to inspect, anyone can use it without applying, and transfers settle in minutes.

The trade-offs are real. A lost seed phrase cannot be reset. A bug in a smart contract can drain funds, and there is no help desk. A 2021 paper from the Bank for International Settlements argued that DeFi is less decentralized than it looks, calling this a decentralisation illusion. It pointed to governance tokens concentrated among insiders, high leverage that can trigger chains of forced liquidations, and a heavy reliance on stablecoins that are themselves run by central issuers.

In short, CeFi asks you to trust a company, while DeFi asks you to trust code and yourself.

How does a DeFi exchange compare with a CeFi exchange?

A CeFi exchange runs an order book on its own servers and holds deposits. Trades inside it are just changes to its internal records until you withdraw. A DeFi exchange, or DEX, settles each swap on-chain from your wallet, often against a pool of tokens.

The BIS paper noted that centralized exchanges still handled the large majority of crypto trading volume at the time, with DEXs under 10%. A CeFi exchange can freeze an account or reverse an internal error. A DEX cannot, but it also cannot block a user or lose deposits it never held.

How does DeFi compare with TradFi?

TradFi means traditional finance, such as banks, brokers and stock exchanges. It operates under long-standing licensing, supervision and, in many countries, deposit insurance. Regulators are now working out how similar rules apply to DeFi. In December 2023 the global securities regulators' body IOSCO issued nine policy recommendations for DeFi, covering risk management, disclosure and enforcement. The BIS authors argued for a same risks, same rules approach.

As of October 2026, how DeFi is regulated still differs widely by country and continues to change.
