What is Wormhole crypto and what does it do?
Wormhole crypto is a cross-chain messaging protocol that lets blockchains like Ethereum and Solana pass messages and tokens, verified by 19 Guardians.
Wormhole crypto refers to Wormhole, a cross-chain messaging protocol, and to its W token. Wormhole lets a smart contract on one blockchain send a message that a contract on another blockchain can trust and act on. That message might say "lock these tokens here and release them there", which is how Wormhole-based bridges move assets between chains.
What does Wormhole crypto do?
Blockchains cannot read each other's data directly. Wormhole fills that gap. Its documentation describes the flow in four steps. An app on the source chain calls Wormhole's Core Contract, which records the message in the chain's logs. Guardians watch those logs and each one signs the message. The combined signatures form a Verifiable Action Approval, or VAA. An off-chain relayer then carries the VAA to the destination chain, where Wormhole's contract checks the signatures before the app acts on it.
Products built on this include token transfers, both wrapped tokens and Native Token Transfers, plus general messaging for apps. For how bridges work in general and why they are frequent targets, see what a crypto bridge is.
What is Wormhole in blockchain security terms?
Wormhole's security rests on its Guardian network. There are 19 Guardians, run by established validator companies rather than anonymous operators, and each has an equal say. A VAA is valid only with signatures from at least 13 of the 19. Wormhole describes this as a proof-of-authority model. The trade-off is that users trust this fixed group, rather than the security of either blockchain alone.
What happened in the Wormhole Ethereum hack?
On February 2, 2022, an attacker minted about 120,000 wrapped ETH on Solana without depositing any real ETH on Ethereum. The flaw was in Wormhole's Solana code: a step meant to verify Guardian signatures did not properly check its inputs, so the attacker could fake approval. About 93,750 of the wrapped ETH was bridged back to Ethereum. Reports valued the theft at roughly $320 million to $325 million at the time, making it one of the largest crypto hacks.
Wormhole offered a $10 million bounty for the funds' return, and the stolen crypto was not recovered from the attacker. Jump Crypto, which owned the company that built Wormhole, replaced the 120,000 ETH so the wrapped tokens stayed backed.
What is Wormhole coin?
The Wormhole coin is W. It launched on April 3, 2024, with an airdrop of 617.3 million tokens to more than 400,000 eligible wallets. Total supply is 10 billion W. It began as a Solana token with plans to support Ethereum's ERC-20 standard as well. As of October 2026, check Wormhole's own documentation for how W is used in governance, as those details can change.
