What is a DEX aggregator and what does it do?
A DEX aggregator is a tool that checks prices across many decentralized exchanges and routes or splits your token swap to get a better overall rate.
A DEX aggregator is a service that compares prices across many decentralized exchanges and sends your swap along the route that returns the most tokens after costs. It works like a flight search site. Instead of checking each exchange yourself, you enter the trade once and the aggregator does the comparison.
What does a DEX aggregator do?
A single decentralized exchange can only offer the price its own pools allow. Liquidity for the same token pair is often spread across many exchanges and pools on the same chain. A large trade in one shallow pool can move the price sharply, an effect described in slippage.
An aggregator queries those sources and runs a routing algorithm. The 0x documentation says its Swap API pulls prices from DEXs and professional market makers, on-chain and off-chain, and splits trades across sources to improve the result. It can also estimate price impact so an app can warn users when liquidity is thin. The output is a ready-made transaction the user signs in their wallet. The aggregator does not hold funds in the meantime, because the swap settles through smart contracts.
Many wallets build this in. When you swap inside a self-custody wallet, the quote often comes from an aggregator working in the background.
What is the meaning of a decentralized exchange aggregator versus an exchange?
An exchange holds the liquidity, either in its own pools or its own order book. An aggregator usually holds none of its own. It is a layer on top that reads other venues and routes to them. The term exchange aggregator is sometimes used more broadly for tools that also compare centralized exchanges, but in DeFi it nearly always means an on-chain swap router.
Well-known examples include 1inch, which says it draws on more than 270 protocols, and Jupiter on Solana. Others, such as 0x, are built mainly for developers who add swaps to their own apps.
What is the OKX DEX aggregator?
The OKX DEX aggregator is the swap tool built into OKX Wallet, the exchange's self-custody wallet. OKX's own explainer, updated in June 2026, says its routing engine, called X Routing, scans more than 250 DEXs across major networks including Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon. It can split trades across venues and shows a preview of the route before you confirm. Because it is non-custodial, it is separate from trading on the OKX exchange account itself.
How are intent-based aggregators different?
A traditional aggregator gives you a transaction with a fixed path. Intent-based designs change that. On CoW Protocol, users sign an intent describing what they want to trade and the minimum they will accept. Independent solvers then compete to fill it, using on-chain pools, private market makers or by matching opposite orders directly. Orders in the same batch clear at one price, which CoW says removes the incentive for most MEV tactics such as front-running.
Aggregators do not remove all risk. A user still pays network fees and any service fee, still needs to set a slippage limit, and still must check that the token contract is the real one.
