How long does unstaking crypto take?
Unstaking can take anywhere from no wait to several weeks, because each blockchain sets its own unbonding period and Ethereum uses an exit queue.
How long unstaking takes depends on the blockchain, the service you staked through and how busy the network is. Some coins can be unstaked almost instantly, while others lock up for days or weeks before they can be sold or moved. The waiting stretch is usually called the unbonding or cooldown period.
Can you stop staking crypto at any time?
You can usually start unstaking whenever you want, but the coins may not be free right away. Kraken's 2026 guide gives these typical waits:
- Cardano (ADA): no unbonding period, so unstaking takes effect immediately.
- Solana (SOL): about two to three days, or one epoch.
- Ethereum (ETH): often one to five days, but longer when the exit queue is busy.
- Cosmos (ATOM): a fixed 21 days set by the protocol.
Kraken says rewards generally stop once unstaking begins. Exchanges may also offer flexible staking, which lets you exit without the wait but usually pays a lower rate because the platform keeps part of the balance unstaked. The basics of crypto staking explain why networks lock coins in the first place.
How long is the Ethereum unstaking queue?
Ethereum validators leave through an exit queue, and ethereum.org says the wait depends on how many others are exiting at the same time. Once a validator is marked withdrawable, its balance is paid out in a sweep that processes up to 16 withdrawals per block, which ethereum.org estimates at about 115,200 a day.
The queue can grow large. On October 13, 2026, the Validator Queue dashboard, which uses beaconcha.in data, showed about 995,000 ETH waiting to exit, with an estimated wait of roughly 17 days plus a sweep delay of about 7 days. Those figures change daily. A validator that has fully exited cannot be restarted, so staking again needs a new validator. More background is in what is Ethereum staking.
How long does Solana unstaking take?
On Solana, staked SOL sits in a stake account, and deactivation happens at epoch boundaries. Coinbase's staking documentation puts unstaking at about one epoch, roughly two to three days, during which the SOL cannot be withdrawn. Solana's own docs add that a network-wide cap limits how much stake can deactivate in each epoch, so the exact time is hard to predict and can stretch longer when a lot of stake is leaving. The steps are covered in how to stake Solana.
Can you sell staked crypto?
Not while it is staked or unbonding. Kraken says coins in the unbonding period cannot be traded, transferred or earn rewards.
The main way around the wait is liquid staking. Tokens such as stETH or JitoSOL represent staked coins and can be swapped on an exchange at any time. Kraken notes the swap may happen at a slight discount and may count as a taxable disposal in some countries. What is liquid staking explains the trade-offs.
