What is Pendle crypto and what is it used for?

Pendle crypto is a DeFi protocol that splits yield-bearing tokens into principal (PT) and yield (YT) parts so users can trade fixed or variable yield.

Pendle crypto is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that lets people separate the future yield of a token from the token itself and trade the two parts. It works with assets that already earn yield, such as staked ETH or yield-bearing stablecoins. CoinGecko notes that Pendle first launched in mid-2021 and runs on several networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum and Base.

What does Pendle crypto do?

Pendle performs what it calls yield tokenization. It first wraps a yield-bearing asset in a standard format called SY (Standardized Yield, based on the EIP-5115 standard). From that wrapped asset, Pendle mints two new tokens.

According to Pendle's documentation, one unit of the underlying asset mints one PT and one YT. Before maturity, equal amounts of PT and YT can be combined and redeemed for the original asset. The docs compare this to a property where ownership and rental income are sold separately. If you are new to earning returns in DeFi, our guide to yield farming covers the basics.

What are Pendle PT and YT?

A Principal Token (PT) can be redeemed for one unit of the accounting asset at maturity. It usually trades below that value, much like a zero-coupon bond, so the gap between the purchase price and the redemption value is a fixed return.

A Yield Token (YT) collects the yield from one unit of the asset until maturity, and the yield can be claimed as it accrues. Once maturity arrives, YT has no value because the underlying stops generating yield for it. Pendle's docs say the price of PT plus the price of YT equals the price of the accounting asset, and its automated market maker (AMM) keeps that relationship holding. Both can be sold before maturity at the market price.

A common underlying is a yield-bearing stablecoin, such as sUSDe, which Pendle uses in its own examples.

What is the Pendle token used for?

PENDLE is the protocol's incentive and governance token, with a total supply listed by CoinGecko at about 281.5 million. Under the old vePENDLE model, holders locked PENDLE for long periods to vote on which pools received incentives and to share protocol revenue.

On January 20, 2026, Pendle launched sPENDLE to replace that system, according to The Block and Cointelegraph. sPENDLE is a liquid staking token. Withdrawal takes 14 days, or can be instant for a 5% fee. Holders stay eligible for rewards by voting on key proposals when a vote is open, and Pendle said up to 80% of protocol revenue would go toward PENDLE buybacks distributed as rewards. Existing vePENDLE balances were converted into sPENDLE with a temporary boost.

What are the risks of using Pendle?

CoinGecko lists smart contract risk, price swings in the underlying asset and governance risk. Positions also have maturity dates, so users need to manage them as each market expires. YT can lose most or all of its value if the yield received is lower than the price paid. These details are as of October 2026 and can change through governance.
