Norway crypto tax rules apply on two levels. Gains and losses when you dispose of crypto are taxed as capital income at 22%, and the value of what you still hold counts toward Norway's annual net wealth tax. Skatteetaten has said many owners do not realise that holdings must go in the tax return even if they never sell.

How is bitcoin tax in Norway calculated?

Skatteetaten classes cryptocurrency, digital tokens and similar digital assets as assets under general rules, not under the rules for currency or shares. A taxable realisation happens when you transfer the asset for payment, or when it is lost or destroyed. The gain or loss is the value you receive minus your purchase cost, adjusted for transaction costs such as exchange fees and gas fees.

Swapping bitcoin for another crypto is a realisation, so it can create a gain or loss even if no kroner change hands. Gifts are not realisations. Losses from fraud or a failed platform become deductible only once the loss is final, which links to the questions covered in what happens if a crypto exchange goes bankrupt. Unrealised losses cannot be deducted.

What is the Norway crypto tax rate?

Income from crypto is capital income taxed at 22%, and deductible losses and costs reduce tax at the same 22%. There is no separate crypto rate.

Mining is taxable whatever the consensus method, which covers proof of work and proof of stake. Mining costs such as equipment and electricity can be deducted. Coins received through a fork or similar event are income at their market value on receipt, which can be zero, and that value becomes their cost. How does Norway wealth tax apply to crypto?

Crypto is a wealth item. You report the value of your holdings at year-end using the market rate on January 1 of the following year. Skatteetaten publishes reference rates for common coins and otherwise expects the rate from the marketplace you used, converted to kroner at Norges Bank rates.

Skatteetaten's current rate table shows no wealth tax up to NOK 1,900,000 per person, or double that for couples assessed jointly. Above that, the combined municipal and state rate is 1.0%, rising to 1.1% on wealth above NOK 21,500,000. Crypto is added to your other assets when working out whether you pass those thresholds.

How do you report crypto to Skatteetaten?

Holdings, purchases, sales and mining income go in the Finance section of the tax return, with one card per asset or a summary card with an attachment. You do not need to send documents, but you must be able to show complete records such as exchange statements and wallet reports on request. In April 2024 Skatteetaten said 48,155 people had declared crypto in their 2022 return. Other countries are compared in crypto tax around the world.

Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
