How is crypto taxed in Sweden?
Sweden crypto tax treats gains as capital income taxed at 30%, using the average cost method, while only 70% of crypto losses can be deducted.
Sweden crypto tax rules treat cryptocurrency as an "other asset" rather than as money, so gains are taxed as capital income at 30%. Every disposal counts, including swaps and purchases made with crypto. Gains and losses are reported on form K4, section D, alongside the annual income tax return.
What is the Sweden cryptocurrency tax rate?
Gains are capital income taxed at 30%, and the whole gain is included. Losses are treated less generously. Only 70% of a crypto loss is deductible, so gains and losses do not fully cancel each other out. Bitcoin and similar coins fall under the rules for other assets in chapter 52 of the Income Tax Act, an approach shaped by a 2018 Supreme Administrative Court ruling. For the general idea of offsetting losses, see crypto losses and taxes.
Sweden allows a simplified 20% flat-rate method for some listed securities, but Skatteverket says it cannot be used for crypto.
How is bitcoin tax in Sweden calculated?
You must use the average cost method, called genomsnittsmetoden. The cost is averaged separately for each cryptocurrency, in kronor, and covers all your purchases across every exchange and wallet. Each new purchase changes the average, which is why detailed records matter. The guide on what is crypto cost basis explains cost methods in general.
Swapping bitcoin for another coin is treated as selling the bitcoin. The sale price is the market value in kronor of the coin you receive, and that value becomes the cost of the new coin. Paying for goods or services with crypto is also a sale, priced at the market value of what you bought.
How are mining and staking taxed in Sweden?
Mining income is usually taxed as income from employment, as a hobby, and only in some cases as business income. The coins' market value when received becomes their cost.
For staking, Skatteverket says locking ether into staking is not itself a disposal. Rewards are capital income, valued at market price at the point they can be disposed of, and reported on a separate line of the return. For the concept, see is crypto staking taxable.
Does Skatteverket get information on crypto?
Yes, from 2026. Under the EU's DAC8 directive and the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, crypto service providers with a link to Sweden must register, check their users' tax residence and file annual reports per user and per asset. The first reports cover 2026 and are due by April 1, 2027.
Skatteverket itself has said the current rules are hard to follow. In a June 2024 memo it asked the government to review simpler rules, such as a flat-rate method, and estimated a tax gap of about 1.5 billion kronor from unreported crypto sales. As of October 2026 the current rules still apply.
Rules differ by country and change often. Check the tax authority or a qualified professional for your own situation.
