What is Quant (QNT) crypto and what does it do?
Quant is a UK company whose Overledger software connects banks and businesses to multiple blockchains. Its QNT token pays for Overledger licences and services.
Quant is a technology company that builds software to link different blockchains with each other and with traditional bank systems. Quant crypto usually refers to its token, QNT, which customers use to pay for access to that software. Unlike many projects, Quant has no foundation or DAO behind it: the product and the token are run by a private company.
What is Quant Overledger?
Overledger is a gateway, not a chain. It gives developers one set of APIs to issue, move and monitor assets across multiple ledgers, so a business does not have to integrate with each blockchain separately. Gemini's guide describes it as a "network of networks."
Supported networks have included Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP Ledger, Polygon, Hyperledger Fabric and others. Developers can build multi-ledger apps that run on several chains at once and pass data between them. That is a similar goal to the cross-chain messaging described in the guides to Chainlink and crypto bridges, although Quant sells mostly to regulated institutions.
As of October 2026, Quant's site also promotes Quant Flow, a payments engine, QuantNet for cross-border use, and PayScript, a rules language for programming how money moves.
What is the QNT token used for?
QNT is used to pay for access to Quant's platform:
- Licence fees. Overledger licences are payable in QNT. Under one release, the annual production licence cost £100, paid in QNT.
- Platform subscriptions. Customers can pay some platform fees in US dollars or subscribe using QNT.
- Planned network role. Quant has said QNT will be the gas token for its Multi-Ledger Rollup, with node operators staking QNT to take part.
QNT holders get no vote, no dividends and no shares in the company. The supply was fixed in 2018. Quant sold about 9.96 million QNT in a token sale that raised about $11 million and burned 9.5 million unsold tokens, leaving a total of about 14.6 million. See utility token vs security token for why these distinctions matter.
What does Quant crypto do for banks?
Quant's pitch is to banks wanting to work with tokenized money without rebuilding their systems. In April 2024, UK Finance chose Quant and R3 as technology partners for trials of the Regulated Liability Network, a shared ledger for tokenized bank deposits. Participating banks included Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest and Santander.
Who runs Quant?
Quant Network Ltd was incorporated in England in September 2015. Its founder and chief executive is Gilbert Verdian, who has a background in cybersecurity in government and private roles. A Swiss affiliate, Quant Network AG, issued the token in 2018. Because a single company controls the software, the token's usefulness depends on that company's products and customers.
