What is XDC Network crypto?

XDC Network is an Ethereum-compatible layer 1 blockchain aimed at trade finance and tokenized assets. Its XDC coin pays fees and is staked to run masternodes.

XDC Network is a blockchain built for businesses that move goods and money across borders. Its native coin, XDC, pays transaction fees and secures the network through staking. The project began in Singapore in 2017 as XinFin, short for Exchange Infinite, and its main network went live in 2019.

What is XDC used for?

The network's main pitch is trade finance, the paperwork and payments behind international trade. Documents such as letters of credit are still often slow and paper-based. XDC aims to put those documents and the matching payments on a shared ledger, and to support ISO 20022, the messaging standard used by banks.

Other uses include:

  • Tokenization. Turning invoices, corporate debt and other assets into tokens, a process explained in what is tokenization.
  • Stablecoin payments. Circle announced native USDC for XDC in August 2025, describing the chain as optimized for global trade finance. Crypto Briefing reported more than $1.3 billion in USDC transactions on the network by August 2026.
  • Private subnets. Companies can run permissioned subnetworks that keep sensitive data private and anchor only hashed checkpoints to the public chain.

As of October 2026, XDC is still mostly in pilots and early adoption in trade finance, including tests of a digital company identity standard called vLEI. Its focus on cross-border business invites comparison with XRP, though the two networks work differently.

How does the XDC network work?

XDC is a layer 1 blockchain compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so developers can write contracts in Solidity and use tools such as MetaMask and Hardhat. Blocks arrive about every two seconds, and transactions are final within a few seconds. The docs give a sample transfer fee well below one cent.

Consensus uses XDPoS 2.0, a delegated proof-of-stake design. XDC holders vote for masternode candidates, and the 108 masternodes on mainnet take turns proposing blocks in epochs of 900 blocks, about 30 minutes. Running a masternode or a standby node requires staking 10 million XDC.

A 2024 paper co-written by researchers linked to the project found the validator set fairly spread out by one measure but flagged concentration of masternodes in Singapore and Germany. Animoca Brands, NTT DOCOMO GLOBAL and Republic joined the validator set in 2026.

What does the XDC coin do?

XDC has two main jobs: paying gas fees and serving as stake for masternodes. Masternodes earn newly issued XDC as rewards. Under the reward rules in the project's docs, which are marked as a work in progress, 10% of each epoch's rewards goes to the foundation and the rest to eligible nodes.

The XDC Foundation, set up in 2021, supports developers and ecosystem growth. Day-to-day block production is handled by the masternodes rather than one company.
