How is crypto taxed in Hungary?
Hungary crypto tax is a flat 15% personal income tax on yearly net crypto income, with no extra social contribution tax and a way to offset past losses.
Hungary crypto tax is relatively simple. Hungary's personal income tax rules treat income from crypto-assets as its own category. That income is taxed at a flat 15%, and no extra social contribution tax is added on top.
What is the crypto tax rate in Hungary?
The rate is 15%. Crypto income includes gains from selling crypto, income from mining and income from other crypto transactions. It is taxed at the general personal income tax rate, with no additional social security charge. By comparison, ordinary capital gains in Hungary can face an extra 13% social tax in some cases.
How is bitcoin taxed in Hungary?
The key difference from many countries is that Hungary looks at the whole year, not each trade. You add up your crypto revenue for the year and deduct your crypto costs for the same year. If the result is positive, you pay 15% on it. You calculate this yourself and pay by the annual tax return deadline.
If you declared an overall crypto loss in an earlier tax year, that loss can be used to reduce the tax due on a later year's profit. This is called tax equalisation. Because the calculation rests on yearly revenue and costs, keeping records of each purchase and its cost basis still matters. For general background, see crypto losses and taxes.
What changed for Hungary crypto tax in 2025?
The 15% rate still applies as of October 2026. The bigger change in 2025 came in market law, not tax law. Hungary's Act VII of 2024 on the crypto-asset market took effect mainly on June 30 2024. A 2025 amendment, Act LXVII of 2025, added a new service called crypto exchange validation.
Under the new section, crypto can generally be exchanged for money or other crypto in Hungary only on the basis of a compliance statement from a licensed validating provider. These providers are supervised by the Supervisory Authority for Regulatory Affairs (SZTFH), which keeps a public register and can withdraw licenses. The law says transfers of value from unauthorized crypto exchanges are invalid and cannot be processed by payment services. The validation rules apply 60 days after the SZTFH issues its implementing decree, so the exact start depends on that decree.
Does DAC8 apply to crypto in Hungary?
Yes. Hungary is an EU member state, so it is bound by DAC8, the directive adopted in October 2023 that extends tax information exchange between EU countries to crypto-assets. That makes it easier for tax authorities to match platform data with tax returns. See how Hungary's approach compares in crypto tax around the world.
