Is Crypto.com safe?
Is Crypto.com safe depends on the risk. It is a licensed exchange, not a scam, but its crypto is not insured and it lost $34 million in a 2022 hack it repaid.
Whether Crypto.com is safe depends on which risk you mean: hacking, company failure, data exposure or legal trouble. Crypto.com is a legitimate, regulated platform that holds customers' crypto for them, so the answer turns on how it protects that crypto and on its record, set out here as of October 2026. Its products and licenses are covered in what Crypto.com is.
Is Crypto.com legit or a scam?
Crypto.com is not a scam in the sense of a fake platform. Its license page lists registrations or licenses in the US, the EU, the UK, Singapore, Dubai, Australia and other places. Its security page lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications, PCI DSS compliance, a HackerOne bug bounty and a proof of reserves page, which it says is run by an independent third party.
It has faced regulators, though. The Dutch central bank fined its operator €2.85 million for serving Dutch customers for about two years without the required anti-money-laundering registration, CoinDesk reported in March 2024. Crypto.com said the issue was fixed and that it would appeal. Fake sites that copy real exchanges are a separate danger, covered in how to spot a fake crypto exchange.
Has Crypto.com been hacked?
Yes. In January 2022, Crypto.com said transactions had been approved without users entering their two-factor code. TechCrunch reported that 483 accounts lost about $15 million in ETH, $19 million in BTC and smaller sums. Chief executive Kris Marszalek said all affected accounts were repaid. The company reset every user's two-factor setup and added a 24-hour wait before a new withdrawal address can be used.
In September 2025, Bloomberg reported that hackers from the Scattered Spider group had phished a Crypto.com employee before early 2023 and exposed some users' personal data. Cointelegraph reported that Crypto.com said it had reported the incident to regulators, that a very small number of people were affected and that no funds were accessed.
Is Crypto.com safe to store crypto?
In the main app, Crypto.com holds the keys, which makes it a custodial wallet. Its security page says customer assets are held 1:1 and that withdrawal addresses must be whitelisted by email.
There is no government insurance on the crypto. Crypto.com says US dollar balances at partner banks are FDIC insured up to $250,000 only if a member bank fails, and that this does not protect against Crypto.com's own failure, theft or fraud. The wider rules are in is crypto insured.
Is Crypto.com legal in the US?
Yes. As of its September 2025 help page, the app is available in 49 states, Washington DC and US territories, with New York restricted. The prepaid debit card is not offered in the territories. Being legal and licensed does not remove the risks above, which also apply to other exchanges, as what happens if a crypto exchange goes bankrupt explains.
