What is Ronin crypto and the RON token?
Ronin is a gaming-focused blockchain built by Sky Mavis, the maker of Axie Infinity. Its RON token pays gas fees and is used for staking and governance.
Ronin is a blockchain designed for games, built by Sky Mavis, the studio that created Axie Infinity. Coinbase describes it as a low-cost network purpose-built for onchain gaming. Players use it to own, trade and move in-game items and tokens without paying the higher fees of a general-purpose chain.
What is the Ronin blockchain?
Ronin is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so it runs smart contracts written for Ethereum-style chains. Coinbase's asset page says it uses proof of authority consensus, a model in which a set of approved validators produces blocks instead of an open pool of miners or stakers.
The official Ronin site describes the network as built by gamers and open to all. Its featured titles include Axie Infinity: Atia's Legacy, Grand Arena, Pixels and Fableborne. Ronin's developer docs also describe Proof of Distribution, a program that rewards builders with RON each epoch based on the onchain activity of their registered contracts. For the wider trend, see our guide to Web3 gaming.
What is the RON token?
RON is Ronin's native token. The official site says holders can pay gas fees with it, earn RON rewards and use it across the ecosystem. Coinbase lists its uses as gas fees, network governance and staking. According to the site, people obtain RON by buying it on exchanges or decentralized exchanges on Ethereum, by bridging assets from other chains, or by earning it through gameplay.
People searching for Ronin on Coinbase will find an information page, but as of October 2026 that page states that Ronin is not tradable on Coinbase. Exchange listings can change, so check the platform directly.
What is Ronin Wallet?
Ronin Wallet is the network's own wallet, promoted under the tagline "One Wallet, All Things Ronin." The official site says Ronin offers wallet-first onboarding, with one-click login options or self-custodial wallets where users hold their own keys. It is designed for use across the Ronin ecosystem, which includes Axie Infinity.
What happened in the Ronin bridge hack?
In March 2022, attackers drained the Ronin bridge, the link that moves assets between Ronin and Ethereum, taking about $620 million in crypto. The FBI said the theft of $620 million in Ethereum reported on March 29 was carried out by Lazarus Group and APT38, hacking groups linked to North Korea. It remains one of the largest crypto thefts on record, covered in our guide to the biggest crypto hacks, and shows why crypto bridges are frequent targets.
