How does inflation affect crypto?
Inflation and crypto are linked mostly through interest rates. Evidence that bitcoin hedges inflation is mixed and has weakened in recent years.
Inflation and crypto are linked, but mostly through what inflation does to interest rate expectations rather than through a direct hedge. Higher-than-expected inflation can mean tighter monetary policy, which has tended to weigh on risky assets including crypto. The idea that bitcoin reliably protects against rising prices has weak support in recent data.
What is CPI and why do crypto traders watch it?
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) tracks how prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services change over time. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it monthly and calls it the most widely used measure of inflation. It also publishes "core" CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy prices.
Traders watch CPI because it shapes expectations for Fed policy. An IMF working paper found that tighter US monetary policy lowers crypto prices through the same risk-taking channel that affects stocks. For more on that link, see how interest rates affect crypto.
What happens to crypto when CPI increases?
There is no fixed pattern. A CoinGecko study, reported by Crowdfund Insider in October 2024, compared bitcoin's moves on CPI release days from January 2022 to October 2024. It found the reaction often did not follow the direction of the data. For example, bitcoin fell about 11% after CPI eased in April 2022.
The study concluded that the Fed's rate hikes starting in March 2022 had a bigger effect on bitcoin than the CPI numbers themselves. In practice, what matters is often whether CPI comes in above or below what markets expected, and what that means for rates.
Is bitcoin a hedge against inflation?
The case for it rests on bitcoin's fixed supply, explained in why there are only 21 million bitcoin. Unlike a currency, no central bank can issue more.
The evidence is mixed. Harold Rodriguez and Jefferson Colombo studied monthly data from August 2010 to January 2023 in a paper published in 2025. They found bitcoin returns did rise after positive inflation surprises, but only for CPI surprises, not for the Fed's preferred Core PCE measure. The effect appeared mainly in bitcoin's early days and disappeared after the COVID-19 outbreak, while gold's hedging behaviour strengthened over the same period.
How does CPI affect bitcoin in the short term?
Release days can bring sharp swings because many traders react at once to the same number. The direction depends on the surprise and on what traders think the Fed will do next. Over longer periods, the research above suggests bitcoin has behaved more like a risk asset than a stable store of value against inflation.
