What is a crypto prime broker?
A crypto prime broker bundles trading, custody, lending and margin financing for funds and institutions in one account, as Coinbase Prime and Ripple Prime do.
A crypto prime broker is a firm that bundles the services a professional trader needs, such as trade execution, custody, financing and reporting, into a single relationship. Its clients are hedge funds, asset managers, trading firms and other institutions rather than everyday app users. The idea is borrowed from Wall Street and adapted to the fact that crypto trades across many separate exchanges.
What does a prime broker do?
In traditional markets, prime brokerage is a package that banks and broker-dealers sell to hedge funds. The core pieces are custody and clearing of assets, securities lending so clients can sell short, financing so they can trade with borrowed money, and consolidated reporting across all positions. Prime brokers often do not charge for the bundle itself. They earn mainly from the spread on loans and financing, from commissions and from settling trades done elsewhere.
What is a prime broker in crypto?
The crypto version solves a specific problem. Liquidity is split across many exchanges, each with its own account, collateral and withdrawal process. A crypto prime broker lets a fund reach many venues from one account, keep collateral in one place and see its exposure in one report. Large single trades can also be handled privately, much like an OTC desk.
Financing is central. Prime brokers lend cash or coins so clients can take leveraged long or short positions, which brings the risks described in crypto futures and leverage.
How does Coinbase Prime work?
Coinbase Prime describes itself as a platform for institutions and crypto private wealth to custody, trade, finance and stake crypto. As of October 2026 its page lists spot and derivatives trading with aggregated liquidity, margin loans and portfolio margining, and staking. Custody sits with Coinbase Custody Trust Company, a New York limited purpose trust company that Coinbase calls a qualified custodian. Coinbase launched Prime Financing in the second quarter of 2023 to let clients take long and short leverage based on risk-based margin.
Other crypto firms have moved into the space. Ripple closed its purchase of Hidden Road, a non-bank prime broker offering clearing, prime brokerage and financing across currencies, digital assets, derivatives and fixed income, on October 24, 2025, and renamed it Ripple Prime.
What is the difference between a prime broker and a custodian?
A custodian's job is to hold assets safely and keep accurate records, as covered in what is crypto custody. A prime broker does that and more. It also lends, extends credit, routes trades and nets positions, so it takes on credit risk and has a stake in what happens to client collateral. In many setups the custody piece is run by a separate regulated entity from the trading and lending side.
That extra role brings risk. Genesis, a large crypto lender and trading firm, froze withdrawals after the FTX collapse, and its lending units filed for bankruptcy on January 19, 2023, owing at least $3.4 billion to more than 100,000 creditors. Its custody, spot trading and brokerage arms were left out of the filing. The aftermath is explained in what happens if a crypto lender freezes withdrawals.
