What is a crypto rich list?
A crypto rich list ranks blockchain addresses by balance. The top spots are often exchange or network wallets holding funds for many people, not single owners.
A crypto rich list is a public ranking of the blockchain addresses that hold the most of a given coin. Because blockchains like Bitcoin, XRP Ledger and Hedera are open, anyone can total up balances and sort them. The result is useful for spotting large holders, but it is easy to misread.
What is a rich list?
A rich list takes every address on a network, reads its current balance and sorts the list from largest to smallest. Block explorers and data sites publish these rankings, often with a second table showing how many addresses fall into each balance range.
Some sites add labels to known addresses. XRPScan's API, for example, returns the top 10,000 XRP Ledger accounts by balance along with names such as exchanges or Ripple where they are known. XRPScan notes that this data refreshes nightly, so it is not live. To look up an address yourself, see how to use a blockchain explorer.
How do you read a rich list?
Three points matter most:
- Exchange wallets skew the top. According to Cointelegraph's July 2025 review of the bitcoin rich list, the largest bitcoin addresses were mostly exchange cold wallets, such as those run by Binance, Robinhood and Bitfinex. Those balances belong to customers, not to the exchange's owners.
- One owner, many addresses. A single person or company can split holdings across many addresses, and funds held through ETFs or trusts sit in custodian wallets on behalf of many investors.
- Addresses are not wealth. A large address might be a fund, a lost wallet, a frozen or seized balance, or a project treasury.
The term crypto whale describes large holders, but a rich list alone cannot tell you who is a whale.
What does the bitcoin rich list show?
The bitcoin rich list ranks addresses holding BTC. Because Bitcoin wallets often use fresh addresses, one owner's coins can be spread thinly, while exchanges consolidate customer coins into a few large cold wallets. For a look at who holds the most by entity, including companies, governments and funds, see who owns the most bitcoin.
What do the XRP and Hedera HBAR rich lists show?
The XRP rich list is shaped by Ripple, which held a large share of supply including XRP in escrow as of Cointelegraph's August 2025 review, and by exchange custody wallets. Cointelegraph also noted that one co-founder's holdings were spread across eight wallets, which is a good example of why address counts overstate the number of holders.
On Hedera, network-controlled accounts can hold large balances. Hedera's docs describe system accounts that collect and distribute network fees and fund staking and node rewards. Anyone reading an HBAR rich list should separate these accounts, along with exchange wallets, from individual holders. Every figure on any rich list is a snapshot from the date it was taken and can change quickly.
