What does capitulation mean in crypto?

Capitulation in crypto is a wave of panicked selling where many holders give up and sell at a loss, often on heavy volume during a steep fall.

Capitulation in crypto means a burst of panicked selling in which large numbers of holders give up and sell, often locking in losses. It usually shows up late in a steep decline, on unusually heavy trading volume. Traders watch for it because a market bottom has sometimes followed, but nobody can confirm it while it is happening.

What does capitulation mean in crypto?

The word means surrender. Morningstar describes capitulation as the stage of a decline when investors feel intense pressure to sell and do so in large numbers, which pushes prices down further before any relief rally. The FOREX.com glossary adds that it often comes with high-volume trading after an extended decline.

The idea comes from stock markets, but crypto produces sharp versions of it because the market trades around the clock and many traders use borrowed money. Forced selling of leveraged positions, explained in what happens if you get liquidated in crypto, can turn ordinary selling into a cascade.

What is bitcoin capitulation?

For bitcoin, analysts try to measure capitulation using blockchain data. One measure is realized losses, the losses people lock in when they move coins they bought at a higher price. CoinDesk reported in July 2022 that the analytics firm Glassnode recorded a record $36 billion in realized losses over 30 days after prices fell in June 2022. The collapse of the UST stablecoin in May 2022 had already produced about $28 billion.

Glassnode argued at the time that a bottom was becoming plausible, but it was a judgment, not a certainty. The deeper slump of that year is covered in what is a crypto winter.

What is miner capitulation?

Miner capitulation happens when mining becomes unprofitable for some operators, so they switch off machines or sell more of their coins to cover costs. It shows up as a drop in hash rate, the total computing power on the network.

The hash ribbons indicator, developed by Charles Edwards of Capriole Investments, compares the 30-day and 60-day moving averages of hash rate. According to Bitcoin Magazine, when the shorter average falls below the longer one, a capitulation period is said to begin, and it ends when the averages cross back. Cointelegraph reported such a signal in February 2025 and an earlier one in October 2024.

The record is mixed. Bitcoin Magazine notes that an August 2021 signal was followed by a fall of more than half, and Edwards himself said the indicator may lose relevance over time. Background on mining economics is in how does bitcoin mining work.

What does a capitulation candle look like?

Traders use the phrase for a single large down candle on a price chart, often with a long lower wick and a spike in volume. It suggests sellers rushed out at once and buyers then stepped in. The guide on how to read a crypto chart explains candles.

Morningstar stresses that capitulation can be observed only in hindsight. A candle that looks like a final flush can be followed by more selling, so the label describes the past, not what comes next.
