What is the difference between spot and futures trading in crypto?
In spot vs futures trading, spot means buying the actual coin at today's price, while futures are contracts that track the price, often with leverage.
The difference between spot and futures trading in crypto comes down to ownership. In spot trading you buy the actual coin at today's price and it lands in your account. In futures trading you buy or sell a contract that tracks the coin's price, usually with borrowed money, and you never hold the coin itself.
What is spot trading in crypto?
Spot trading is the plain version of buying and selling. Coinbase describes it as trading crypto at the prevailing market price, where an order fills against the order book and the coins are credited to your account. You pay in full, you own what you bought, and you can withdraw it to a wallet, send it or use it elsewhere. Our guide to crypto trading covers order types and how spot markets work day to day.
Because you own the coin, the worst case on a spot trade without borrowing is that its value falls to zero. You cannot lose more than you paid. The trade-off is custody: once you hold the coin, keeping it safe is your job or your exchange's.
How is futures trading different from spot trading?
A futures contract tracks a coin's price without delivering the coin. Traders can go long to profit if the price rises, or short to profit if it falls, and they post margin instead of paying the full value. That margin is what allows leverage, and leverage is what creates liquidation, as explained in crypto futures and leverage.
Futures also carry costs spot does not. On perpetual and perpetual-style contracts, holders pay or receive a funding rate. Coinbase's US perpetual-style futures, for example, charge funding hourly and are held at a CFTC-registered futures firm, while its spot balances sit with a different company outside that protection regime.
What is the difference between spot trading and margin?
Spot margin trading means borrowing to buy or sell real coins on a spot market. It looks like spot, because coins actually change hands, but it adds the borrowing and liquidation risk of leverage. Kraken says its spot margin uses your whole account balance as collateral and closes positions automatically if your equity drops below the maintenance level. How collateral is shared between positions is covered in cross margin vs isolated margin.
Is spot trading safer than futures?
They carry different risks rather than one being risk-free. Spot holdings can still fall sharply in value, and the coins can be lost to hacks or scams. Futures add leverage, forced liquidation and funding costs, and the CFTC warns that leveraged trading amplifies risk and that customers may lose more than their initial investment.
Regulators treat the two differently too. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority banned the sale of crypto futures, options and similar derivatives to retail consumers from January 6, 2021, citing extreme volatility and limited consumer understanding. In the US, crypto futures for retail customers are offered through CFTC-registered firms. Rules differ by country, so these details reflect the market as of October 2026.
