Is bitcoin legal in Colombia?
Yes, but it is not money. In a 2020 opinion the Banco de la República said the peso is the only legal tender with unlimited power to settle debts. It said crypto assets are not money or currency for legal purposes, and are not a foreign currency because no monetary authority backs them. Nobody is obliged to accept bitcoin as payment.
Is crypto banned in Colombia?
No. The central bank's opinion does not prohibit crypto. It notes that Colombian regulation does not expressly mention crypto assets at all.
The main limit is on the traditional finance sector. The Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia (SFC), the financial supervisor, has said the entities it supervises may not custody, invest in, intermediate or operate with crypto, as recorded in the same central bank opinion. Crypto exchanges therefore operate outside the supervised banking system.
Is crypto taxed in Colombia?
Yes. In Concepto 5146 of March 31, 2026, the tax authority DIAN said crypto assets are intangible assets by nature. Their value for wealth tax purposes, their tax cost and the income from selling them follow the general rules of the Estatuto Tributario. DIAN also said there is no special tax regime or legal tax definition for crypto. For how other countries tax crypto, see crypto tax around the world.
Reporting is getting tighter. DIAN Resolución 000240, issued on December 24, 2025, makes crypto-asset service providers report user and transaction data under the OECD Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) from tax year 2026, Holland & Knight reported. The first reports are due by the last business day of May 2027. In May 2026 DIAN trained more than 60 industry representatives on the new duty.
Is Colombia crypto friendly?
Crypto use is allowed, but a full legal framework is still in progress. The SFC said in September 2026 that it will help draft a digital assets bill, El País reported, and its innovation sandbox has run pilots such as blockchain-based bond issuance.
