Is crypto trading legal in Ghana?

Trading is legal, and the platforms you trade on are being brought under licensing. Act 1154 is the legal basis for registering, licensing and supervising virtual asset service providers (VASPs), the Bank of Ghana says. These providers must also follow the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044).

The work is split between two regulators:

  • The Bank of Ghana covers wallet providers, exchanges, stablecoin issuers, tokenization and crypto lending, through a dedicated virtual assets office.
  • The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) covers securities-linked services, such as crypto investment products and brokerage, and runs a 12-month sandbox.

All VASPs, including exchanges, wallets, custodians and payment platforms, need a licence before operating, the ITA says. In practice the system is still being switched on. The Bank of Ghana's application and fees pages were marked as due by the end of the third quarter of 2026, and it listed no licensed providers. In August 2026 the Bank of Ghana governor said full operationalisation is targeted for 2027, the Ghana News Agency reported.

A February 2026 joint notice from the Bank of Ghana and the SEC also says that crypto promotion is regulated and that VASPs should avoid mass marketing unless authorized.
