Is MetaMask safe?

Is MetaMask safe depends on use. It is a self-custody hot wallet with scam alerts and a bug bounty, but a leaked phrase or bad approval cannot be undone.

Whether MetaMask is safe depends mostly on how it is used. MetaMask is a self-custody wallet, so no company holds your crypto, and no company can reverse a theft. The app has layers of protection, set out here as of October 2026, but the biggest risks sit with the user. How the wallet works is covered in what MetaMask is.

Is MetaMask safe from hackers?

MetaMask shows security alerts by default in its extension and mobile app. They flag tokens, addresses, websites and transactions linked to scams, using its own analysis plus partners such as Blockaid. MetaMask says the simulations do not guarantee that every threat is caught, and a user can still confirm a flagged transaction.

Outside researchers can report flaws through a bug bounty program on HackerOne. One such report mattered. In June 2022, security firm Halborn disclosed a flaw it called Demonic, under which a recovery phrase imported into the MetaMask, Phantom, Brave or XDefi extensions could be saved unencrypted on the computer's disk, Decrypt reported. An attacker needed access to the drive. MetaMask fixed it in version 10.11.3 in March 2022 and paid Halborn $50,000. The mobile app was not affected.

Most losses come from tricks, not code flaws. Fake sites and malicious approvals are covered in crypto phishing and wallet drainers.

Is MetaMask safe on a phone?

The mobile app can be unlocked with Face ID or a fingerprint, and MetaMask says biometrics never replace the Secret Recovery Phrase as the way to recover a wallet.

Backups are the weak point on phones. In April 2022 MetaMask warned Apple users that automatic iCloud backups could store the password-encrypted wallet vault. Finance Magnates reported a case where scammers posing as Apple obtained a user's iCloud access and took about $650,000. MetaMask's advice was a strong vault password and turning off app backups to iCloud.

Is MetaMask safe to store crypto?

MetaMask keeps keys on an internet-connected device, which makes it a hot wallet. Its own safety tips suggest a hardware wallet for large holdings, so that a separate device must sign each transaction. The trade-off is explained in hot wallet vs cold wallet.

Its other advice is to never share the recovery phrase, enter it only when creating or restoring a wallet, use a strong password stored offline, and limit how much any app may spend.

Is MetaMask safer than Trust Wallet?

There is no neutral score for that. Both are self-custody hot wallets with apps and browser extensions, so the same user-side risks apply. Their records differ. Trust Wallet said a malicious version of its Chrome extension, published with a leaked store key, drained 2,520 addresses in December 2025, and it chose to reimburse victims. Its own security model is covered in is Trust Wallet safe.
