Is Phantom wallet safe from hackers?

Phantom's security page describes two main defenses. Transaction previews, powered by Blowfish, simulate a transaction before you approve it and warn about wallet drainers and risky approvals. An open-source blocklist, updated daily, covers more than 2,000 malicious domains.

The code has also been checked from outside. Security firm Least Authority audited the mobile app, browser extension and key-handling code between February and April 2024. It made two suggestions, including replacing a weak password-stretching method, and its June 2024 final report says both were fixed.

Phantom was also caught by a flaw that hit several wallets. In 2022, researchers at Halborn disclosed the Demonic bug, under which an imported recovery phrase could be saved unencrypted on a computer's disk. Decrypt reported that Phantom fixed it between January and April 2022.

Was Phantom hacked in 2022?

In August 2022, about $4 million was drained from 9,230 Solana wallets, some of them in Phantom. Phantom said it found no sign that its systems were compromised. The Block reported that Solana developers traced the theft to Slope, a different wallet that had sent recovery phrases to its server.
