MetaMask vs Trust Wallet, what is the difference?

MetaMask and Trust Wallet are both self-custody wallets, but they differ in supported chains, swap fees, and how each has handled security incidents.

MetaMask vs Trust Wallet is a common comparison because both are self-custody wallets that work on phones and in browsers. Neither holds your funds for you, and both let you connect to decentralized apps. The differences are in network coverage, fees, design focus and security history. This page compares them factually and does not pick a winner.

MetaMask or Trust Wallet, which networks do they support?

MetaMask began as an Ethereum wallet. Its multichain accounts now give each account one EVM address, one Solana address and one Bitcoin address. The EVM address works across Ethereum and layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Base and Linea. Hardware wallet accounts in MetaMask stay EVM-only for now.

Trust Wallet says it supports more than 100 blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and BNB Smart Chain. It runs on iOS, Android and as a browser extension, and says private keys never leave your device. For more background, see what Trust Wallet is.

What are the fees for MetaMask vs Trust Wallet?

In both wallets, every on-chain transaction carries a network fee, which goes to the blockchain's validators rather than to the wallet.

The main difference is in swaps. MetaMask's support page lists a MetaMask fee of 0.875% on swaps, alongside the quoted rate and the network fee. MetaMask acts as a quote aggregator across decentralized exchanges and bridges. Trust Wallet does not publish a single swap percentage in its guide. It says any provider fee is built into the quoted output, shown with the network fee and slippage setting before you sign.

How does MetaMask vs Trust Wallet security compare?

Both use a secret recovery phrase that controls your funds, so the biggest risk in either wallet is someone obtaining that phrase or tricking you into signing a malicious transaction. Our guides on whether MetaMask is safe and whether Trust Wallet is safe go into detail.

One recent incident affected Trust Wallet's browser extension. On December 24, 2025, an unauthorized build, version 2.68, was published to the Chrome Web Store. Trust Wallet says it drained about 2,520 wallet addresses during December 24 to 26, with roughly $8.5 million tied to attacker addresses. The company said mobile apps were not affected and that it would reimburse affected users.

How do they compare with Phantom?

Phantom started on Solana and, as of October 2026, supports Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon and Bitcoin, according to CryptoSlate. It dropped Monad and Sui support in August and September 2026. Phantom lists a 0.85% fee on selected same-network swaps. It runs on Chrome, iOS and Android, and CryptoSlate describes it as only partly open source. See what Phantom wallet is for more.
